Anaheim Acquires Dadonov From Vegas?
By Michael Walters
After the trade deadline passed there were various reports the Vegas Golden Knights were going to trade Evgenii Dadonov and it might be to the Ducks. Eventually TSN’s Elliott Friedman announced the trade as Dadonov and a 2023 or 2024 second round pick were sent to Anaheim in exchange for John Moore and Ryan Kesler‘s contract.
The Anaheim Ducks later confirmed the trade and said the pick is conditional.
Dadonov started his NHL career with Florida in 2009-2010. He was with Ottawa in the 2020-21 season and then played for Vegas this season. He has 15 goals and 12 assists for 27 total points in 62 games with the Golden Knights. Overall, in his career he had 249 total points (119 G + 130 A). He almost scored 30 goals in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 season with Florida. Some feel his play as of late has been as a great, but others feel he still have something left in the tank.
Dadonov is signed through the 2022-23 season and has a $5 million cap hit. It appears Vegas wanted to clear out some cap space especially with Jake Eichel’s large contract. They were willing to move Dadonov and take on Kesler’s contract with a $6.875 cap hit which expires at the end of this season. The Ducks also traded John Moore, who was just picked up in the Hampus Lindholm deal.
Issue At Hand:
According to multiple reports Dadonov appeared to have a no trade clause(NTC) with Ottawa. Two issues have come up as to whether the NTC was filed correctly and whether Vegas received the NTC. The Ducks were one of his teams on his no trade list. This trade is in dispute and will have to be handled with help from the NHLPA.
If the trade goes through, then Pat Verbeek has done it again. He was able to trade away Kesler’s contract in exchange for taking on Dadonov’s. The Ducks would also got another draft pick out of this deal and moved Moore. If Dadonov can provide some offense this season and next season as at least a top 9 forward, then this is even a bigger win for the Ducks if the trade is confirmed.
Update 3-23-22:
The league reversed the trade because Dadonov did have a valid no trade clause on file and Anaheim was one of the no trade teams.
