Prospect Update: Michael Callow
By Thomas Harrington
Drafted by Anaheim in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, forward Michael Callow completed his sophomore season at Harvard University. He played with fellow Anaheim prospect Ian Moore.
Callow skated in 30 games for Harvard, scoring three goals and nine points. His numbers fell from his freshman season, where he scored three goals and 15 points. He ranked tied for 11th in goals, ninth in assists, and 11th in points on the team. His best offensive stretch of the season came in February where he had three points in two games. In one of those games Callow had two assists, tying his career high for assists in a game set in his freshman season.
I had three expectations for Callow last year, and he missed on all three of them. First, I wanted him to set career highs in goals, assists, and points. Second, for him to once again play in all of Harvard’s games. Finally, for him to be one of Harvard’s top three point producers. While that last one was on the ambitious side, he did finish tied for fifth in team scoring in his freshman season. The other two expectations felt like safe bets a year ago. However, while his assist and point totals did fall, his goal total did at least stay the same, and he only missed a handful of games. Regardless, this past season was something of a disappointment for Callow.
Callow will be returning to Harvard for his junior year of NCAA hockey. I have two expectations for him. First, for Callow to put up career highs in goals, assists, and points. Despite his drop in offensive production, I still think that Callow can better the numbers he put up as a freshman. Second, for him to finish among Harvard’s top five point producers. Harvard hasn’t been a high scoring team these past few years, and if Callow had 16 points this past season, he would have finished tied for fourth in team scoring, so if he can get above 15 points, he will likely finish top five in team scoring.
Callow is still several years away from making it to the NHL. He has at least one more season of college hockey ahead of him, but I think he’ll likely play two more years of NCAA hockey before looking to turn pro. If the Ducks are happy with his development and sign him to an entry-level contract, he should then spend at least two years with the Gulls. If he’s successful in San Diego, then I could see him getting a chance in Anaheim in four to five years.
Callow is currently unsigned, and the Ducks control his rights until his college career ends in 2027. With two more years of college development ahead of him, Callow still has time to impress the Ducks enough for them to sign him to an entry-level deal. However, if his play continues to regress, the Ducks will likely choose to not sign him and let him leave as a free agent.
The next prospect update will be on defenseman Tyson Hinds.
