Prospect Update: Jan Mysak

By Thomas Harrington

Acquired from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for forward Jacob Perreault, forward Jan Mysak completed his first full season with the San Diego Gulls this past season.

After recording only one goal with the Gulls in 14 games to end the 2023-2024 season, Mysak exploded this year, scoring 18 goals and 42 points in 68 games, setting career highs across the board. He finished third on the team in goals and fourth on the team in assists and points. It took him a little while to get going, as Mysak only had three points through early December. However, after December 11th, his season completely turned around, and after that point, he had a pointless streak of three or more games only two times. He was used primarily on the second line, and he and Sasha Pastujov formed a dangerous duo. Pastujov was recalled from the ECHL in late November, and putting the two of them together is one of the things that really helped Mysak take off. He hit a new career high in points in a game with three, doing it in three separate games, including the final game of the season, where he registered three assists.

I had two expectations for Mysak last summer, and he easily surpassed both of them. First, I wanted him to fit in better with his new team. After San Diego acquired him, Mysak played primarily on the fourth line and was a healthy scratch a number of times. Forcing his way onto the team’s second line and forming some excellent chemistry with Pastujov really showed how well he fit in this past season. Second, I wanted Mysak to play more consistently in the lineup and not be a healthy scratch so often. He ended up missing only four games all season.

This coming season, Mysak should be back with the Gulls, and may even have a shot at making his NHL debut as well. After such a successful season, expectations will be higher for him this coming year. First, I want to see Mysak hit the 20 goal mark. Only one Gulls player was able to hit that last year, and they need more players to do so if they want to make the Calder Cup Playoffs. Second, for him and Pastujov to continue to play well together. It was great to see what the two did over the course of a large chunk of the season. Now I’d like to see what they can do when put together from the start of the season.

While I don’t think Mysak is ready for a full time NHL job, there’s a chance he does get called up at some point this season and makes his NHL debut. It’s far from a guarantee, and I wouldn’t even put him in the group of players most likely to be called up first, but he’s definitely got a chance. However, even if he doesn’t, as long as he has another strong season with San Diego, I think we’ll see him for at least a game or two with Anaheim in the 2026-2027 season.

Mysak recently signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Ducks. He’ll be a restricted free agent when it’s over. If he can duplicate or exceed what he did this past season, the Ducks will likely extend him again a year from now, probably on another short, two-way deal. If he takes a huge step forward and makes his NHL debut, then he’ll have a shot at a one-way deal. However, if his play falters, Anaheim could choose to not qualify him and let him leave as a free agent.

The next prospect update will be on forward Maxim Masse.
