The Anaheim Ducks announced they traded Jacob Perreault to the Montreal Canadiens for Jan Mysak.

Perreault spent the last four years primarily playing in San Diego. He appeared in 161 games in the AHL recording 91 total points (32 G + 59 A). He also had 179 penalty minutes in San Diego. He made his NHL debut on January 8th, 2022, but that was the only game he played with the Ducks. This season he had 18 total points(7 G + 11 A) and 44 penalty minutes in 31 games with San Diego. He is a native of Montreal, Quebec so this will be a homecoming for him.

Perreault was selected 27th overall by Anaheim in 2020 NHL entry level draft. He is in the second year of his entry-level contract(ELC). He was scratched last night in the Gulls game and this trade explains why he held out.

Jan Mysak has spent the last three seasons with the AHL Laval Rocket recording 31 total points(20 G + 11 A) and 28 penalty minutes in 110 contests. This season he posted 20 total points (13 G + 7 A) in 48 AHL games.

Mysak was selected 48th overall by Montreal in the 2020 NHL entry level draft. Mysak will report to the San Diego Gulls.

Analysis:

Anaheim and Montreal swapped 2020 picks in this deal. Perreault is a great skater especially in odd man rush or one-on-one situations. He has a good hockey IQ, plenty of offensive upside, and can score in a variety of ways. His defensive game has had issues at times and sometimes he isn’t strong on the puck. He could never crack the Ducks lineup so hopefully a change of scenery will work for him.

Mysak is in a similar situation as Perreault since he could never make it full time in Montreal. Mysak isn’t the best skater, but he is tough on the puck and will go in the dirty areas after the puck. He has an excellent wrist shot with a quick release. He is also a solid playmaker with a good vision and excellent passing skills. He is good on the back check defensively as he usually finds himself in the right position. He is also good on the penalty kill.

Perreault has more offensive upside than Mysak, but Mysak is a better well-rounded player overall who can play center and wing. Mysak should be a better addition to the Ducks bottom six than Perreault. Hopefully they can both thrive with their new teams.
