Henrique and Carrick Traded To Edmonton

The Anaheim Ducks traded Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick to the Edmonton Oilers per multiple reports.

The Ducks received the Oilers’ first-round pick for 2024 and a fifth-round conditional pick for 2025, which can become a fourth if Edmonton wins the cup this season according to the Athletics’ Eric Stephens. The Oilers are also received a seventh round draft pick per Elliotte Friedman. The Ducks also retained 50% of Henrique’s and Carrick’s contracts.

Additionally, the Oilers sent a conditional 2026 fourth-round draft pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for retaining 25% of Henrique’s contract. If the Oilers don’t win the cup this season then the draft pick becomes a 2025 fourth-round draft pick instead. Lightning also sent the reserve rights of goalie Ty Taylor to the Oilers.

The three teams involved later confirmed the three-way deal.

Adam Henrique spent nearly the last seven seasons with Anaheim compiling 257 total points (122 G + 135 A) in 455 games with the Ducks. He played a versatile role as a winger and center for the team. Henrique was in the final year of his contract with Anaheim and was set to be an unrestricted free agent(UFA) in the summer.

Sam Carrick is also a pending UFA for this summer. Carrick spent the last six seasons with Anaheim and San Diego in the AHL. He played in 205 games with Anaheim and amassed 46 total points (25 G + 21 A). He played a bottom-six forward role for the Ducks and often mixed it up by dropping the gloves when he felt it was necessary.

The Ducks recalled Glenn Gawdin and Pavol Regenda from San Diego as a result of this trade. They were both present for the morning skate today.

Analysis:

This is great return for the Ducks. General Manager Pat Verbeek was able to get a first round draft pick for two pending UFAs that could have been lost for nothing if they didn’t re-sign in the summer. It’s unfortunate to see the guys go, who have both been staples for this team for several of the last seasons. However, Henrique and Carrick will both now get a chance to contend for a cup with the Oilers. They will also reunite with Corey Perry.

Henrique had a great season, but his value right now is probably the highest is going to be with the scarcity of versatile centers on the market, which is practically none. He also isn’t getting any younger at the age of 34. Carrick was a great role player for the Ducks and will be missed, but his departure paves the way for younger players to fill that role. Carrick is currently 32 years of age. The youth movement continues in Anaheim.

Lastly, Anaheim now has seven draft picks in the first three rounds for the upcoming draft and nine total. The Ducks have better odds of drafting some quality players and they also have more options for trading with the stock pile of draft picks they now possess.

Note: The Ducks have retained salary on Carrick, Henrique, and Ilya Lyubushkin. The retention limit is three players so they can no longer retain any salary for any future trades this season.
