Ducks Rally Past The Flames

Photo: NHL

The Anaheim Ducks closed out their road trip in Calgary against the Flames. Lukas Dostal started in net against Dustin Wolf.

Recap:

William Stromgren scored in the opening minutes to give Calgary an early 1-0 lead.

Jeff Malott tied up the game less than 30 seconds later. He brought the puck in front and was denied, but got his own rebound scoring to tie the game.

In the final minutes of the period, Joel Hanley and Joel Farabee scored to give the Flames 3-1 lead at the end of the period.

Ville Husso came in to start the second period for Anaheim.

Tristan Luneau scored just over halfway through the second period. He scored from the slot to bring Anaheim within one.

Leo Carlsson scored on the power play in the opening minute of the third period to tie the game at three. Beckett Sennecke found Carlsson in the slot for the score.

Cutter Gauthier scored with just under two minutes to go to give Anaheim the lead. Mikael Granlund passed the puck to Cutter Gauthier in the left face-off circle and he scored on a one-timer.

The Flames pulled their goalie and Nikita Nesterenko scored into the empty net. The Ducks won 5-3.

Analysis:

The Ducks got down 3-1 in the first period, but were able to fight back to tie the game early in the third period. Anaheim got two more goals in the third period and went on to win 5-3.

Unlike the last two games where Anaheim got ahead early and had to hang on, this time the Ducks had to rally from an early deficit. This contest was similar to the game against Ottawa. The Ducks gave up three goals in that contest and then shut out the Senators the rest of the way. The Ducks did the same to the Flames in this contest.

Dostal had a rough start in this one and had to be pulled after the first period. He gave up three goals on just 11 shots. This was the first game for Dostal since October 27th where he gave up six goals while facing 33 shots on goal. Husso came in relief and stopped all 10 shots he faced. It’s going to be interesting to see how the goalie situation plays out moving forward.

Gauthier continues to be on fire. He has 10 goal in his last five games with two back-to-back hat tricks.

Anaheim continues to score on the power play. They went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

The Ducks have won four in a row and they try to extend their winning streak at home on Sunday against Pittsburgh.

Team Notes/Stats:

Anaheim is the 4th team since the 1986-87 season to record give goals in seven consecutive games.

This was the seventh game in a row the Ducks scored a power play goal.

The Ducks are 5-0-0 in Canada this season.

Jackson LaCombe extended his point streak to nine games and passed Scott Niedermayer and Oleg Tverdovsky for the longest run which was eight games perviously.

What’s Next?

The Ducks will host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday at 5 PM
