Anaheim Trades Pastujov To Montreal For Farrell

Photo: NHL

By Michael Walters

The Anaheim Ducks announced today they acquired Sean Farrell from Montreal in exchange for Sasha Pastujov.

Farrell played in six NHL games during the 2022-23 season with Montreal and scored one goal. Since then he has spent the last three seasons in the AHL with the Laval Rocket. He has played in 186 games with Laval recording 125 total points (46 G + 79 A). He had a +6 on ice rating and 40 penalty minutes during the last three seasons. He also played in 18 Calder Cup playoff games recording 12 total pints (3 G + 9 A). He led the Laval last season with 53 total points (17 G + 36 A)

Pastujov led the San Diego Gulls in points last season with 57 (21 G + 36 A) and had a +3 on ice rating. He had a goal in two Calder Cup playoff games. He played in 160 games with the Gulls recording 124 total points (48 G + 77 A) for the last three seasons. He also played 12 games with the Tulsa Oilers during the 2024-25 season. He had 16 total points (9 G + 7 A) during his short stint in the ECHL. He has yet to play in an NHL game yet. He was a restricted free agent with Anaheim.

Analysis:

This is a minor AHL trade. Both players are almost mirrors of each other. They both have shown they can score in the AHL and have solid offensive upside, but neither has been able to translate their game to the NHL level. Pastujov still needs work on his skating and his two-way game. He needs to improve on his back checking. Farrell also needs to work on his defensive game. He needs to be more physical at 5’9″ and 175 pounds as he can get knocked off the puck easily. Maybe a change of scenery can help both of them.

With Troy Terry out several months to start next season, Farrell could make an appearance in the NHL again, but it will be a very slim chance. Forwards like Sam Colangelo, Nathan Gaucher, and Nikita Nesterenko will all get the call in Anaheim first.
