Ducks Fall Short To Oilers

The Canadian Press

By Michael Walters

The Anaheim Ducks continued their road trip in Edmonton against the Oilers. Ville Husso was in net against Tristan Jarry.

The Ducks went on the power play early in this contest and scored. Mikael Granlund beat Jarry over the shoulder from the left face-off circle.

The Oilers were then awarded a four minute power play when Darnell Nurse appeared to be high sticked by Ryan Strome and was bleeding. Zach Hyman scored at the side of the net to tie the game. It was a 1-1 game after the first period.

Alex Killorn scored in the opening minute of the second period to make it a 2-1 Anaheim lead. Ryan Poehling found Killorn in front and he skated to the far post beating Jarry with a quick shot.

The Oilers then responded with four goals in just under four minutes. Spencer Stastney, Darnell Nurse, and Mattias Ekholm scored twice to build a 5-2 lead for Edmonton.

The Ducks got one back before the period was over. Granlund scored his second goal again on the power play. He beat Jarry with a wrist shot from the right circle. Anaheim was down 5-3 at the end of the second period.

In the third period Anaheim pulled within one goal. Granlund completed the hat trick scoring his third goal again on another power play.

The Ducks pulled Husso in the final minutes, but the Oilers scored twice into the empty net and went on to win 7-4. Connor McDavid scored the first goal and Ekholm scored his third to complete the hat trick.

Analysis:

The Ducks played a solid opening period on the road. Anaheim was able to score first and then was tied at the end of the first period. They scored early in the second period to make it 2-1, but then the wheels fell off. The Oilers were able to score four times in just under four minutes to flip this game in their favor with a 5-2 lead. The Ducks were able to battle back to within a goal, but a pair of empty net goals put this one away for the Oilers.

Granlund was on fire in this contest scoring a hat trick and all three of his goals came while on the power play. Anaheim ended up going 3-for-4 on the power play. The Ducks were able to keep the red hot Oilers power play at bay allowing just one goal in three attempts.

Overall, the Ducks ended up outshooting the Oilers 40 to 32. Anaheim really poured it on in the third period with 16 shots on goal to just five for the Oilers, which two were empty net goals. Even after getting down by three goals, the Ducks fought back and nearly tied the game in the third period.

At even strength the Ducks put up 59 shot attempts to 45 for the Oilers. They posted a CF% of 56.73% and FF% of 61.25%. Anaheim was the better team overall, but four minutes of poor play in the second period cost them.

One thing to keep an eye on is Ryan Strome. He only played 4 minutes and 42 seconds in this contest. He only took a handful of shifts after the opening period. He started the season injured, but there was no report he was hurt in this contest. His playing time has fluctuated this season and he has been a healthy scratch several times.

Team Notes/Stats:

Pat Verbeek gave a brief interview during the first intermission. Some of the topics included the trade deadline, Olympics, Beckett Sennecke‘s play, and Leo Carlsson / Cutter Gauthier contract extensions. Watch the full interview here: Verbeek on Victory+

The Ducks recorded hat tricks in back-to-back games. It happened one other time in team history when Corey Perry (1-8-12) and Saku Koivu (1/10/12) did it during the 2010-11 season.

Granlund scored three power play goals to net the hat trick. This is the third time it has happened in franchise history. Paul Kariya did it on 3/29/01 and Teemu Selanne on 10/29/08.

Anaheim is the first team in NHL history to win 5 or more straight games without either of their top two players points in any game during the streak.

What’s Next?

The Ducks travel to Vancouver to face the Canucks on Thursday at 7 PM.
