San Diego Gulls Biweekly Report 4
By Thomas Harrington
The San Diego Gulls played four games over the past two weeks and had a record of 2-1-1, keeping them in the thick of the playoff race in the Pacific Division. San Diego continues to struggle in overtime, something they’ll need to improve on if they want to get back to the Calder Cup Playoffs.
The Gulls started out by traveling to Tucson to face the Roadrunners. Tristan Luneau and Jan Mysak both scored in the first period, with Mysak’s goal being scored in the final minute. In the second period, Tucson scored twice to tie the game before Sam Colangelo put the Gulls back on top. The Roadrunners tied the game in the third, but Stian Solberg put San Diego ahead in the final minutes of regulation and Tim Washe finished things off with an empty net goal, giving the Gulls a 5-3 victory. San Diego’s next night was probably their worst game of the season as they returned home to host Coachella Valley. The Firebirds scored twice in the first period, once in the second, and twice in the third, and won the game 5-0.
San Diego then hosted the Texas Stars for a pair of games. In the first game, Tomas Suchanek got the start, his first AHL game after missing all of last season with an injury. Colangelo scored in the first but Texas tied the game in the second. Tyson Hinds scored his first of the season in the third but the Stars tied the game a few minutes later. The game went to overtime, Texas found the gamewinner less than a minute into the extra session, and won 3-2. Suchanek stopped 21 of 24 shots in his return to action.
In the second game, Calle Clang got the start, his first start in about a month after taking a leave of absence from the team in November. Mysak opened the scoring in the first period. Neither team found the back of the net in the second, but in the third Washe scored on the powerplay and then Sasha Pastujov scored on a two-on-one break to make it a 3-0 game. Washe followed that up with a shorthanded empty net goal before Texas finally got on the board and broke Clang’s shutout bid. Nico Myatovic scored into the empty net to finish the game, giving San Diego a 5-1 victory. Clang stopped 18 shots in his return to the net.
The Gulls will play six games over the next two weeks. They’ll start out on the road in San Jose to face the Barracuda before returning home to host the Henderson Silver Knights for a pair of games. San Diego will then travel to Calgary to face the Wranglers for two games, before finishing things off in Bakersfield against the Condors.
Washe and Colangelo continue to be the two forwards most likely to get called up to Anaheim, but Mysak has also been playing well lately, with four points in his last four games. He’s been San Diego’s best forward some nights and could get rewarded with the call. Luneau continues to be the Gulls defenseman most likely to get the call, but Hinds has played well this year and could get called up as well.
Due to injuries in net, Anaheim already has two minor league goaltenders on their roster: Ville Husso and Vyacheslav Buteyets. Buteyets recently made his NHL debut and didn’t play great, but neither did the team in front of him that night. If Husso needs the night off, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Ducks swapped Clang and Buteyets. I don’t think Clang is ready to play in the NHL on a consistent basis, but I think he’s a better option than Buteyets right now. However, if the Ducks feel comfortable with Husso until Lukas Dostal gets back, then Clang will likely stay in San Diego for the time being.
Five of San Diego’s next six games are against the team right behind them in the standings, or the two teams immediately ahead of them in the standings. Seven points separates second from ninth in the Pacific Division. Given how tight the standings are, the Gulls have little margin for error going forward. Apart from the blemish against Coachella Valley, they are playing well lately, and need to keep up at least that level of play for the rest of the season.
