Ducks Come Up Short Against The Senators

The Anaheim Ducks continued their homestand against the Ottawa Senators. Petr Mrazek was in net against Linus Ullmark.

Ottawa got on the board first towards the end of the opening period. Nick Cousins scored on a one-timer in the slot with Mrazek partially screened by Radko Gudas and Ian Moore. Sens held a 1-0 lead at the end of the period.

The Ducks responded in the middle frame scoring two goals in just under 90 seconds. Cutter Gauthier was streaking down the slot area and initially fanned on a pass attempt to Beckett Sennecke. Cutter was able to regain control of the puck and found Beckett wide open at the side of the net for the tap in goal.

Then Chris Kreider found Mason McTavish in the slot and he beat Ullmark to the far post to make it a 2-1 Anaheim lead.

The Senators would tie it up in the final minute of the period on the power play. Shane Pinto scored in close after Mrazek tried to poke check the puck. The teams were tied at two heading to the third period.

Ottawa went ahead 3-2 with about two minutes left in regulation when Drake Batherson tipped a point shot past Mrazek. The Ducks pulled their goalie, but couldn’t get the tying goal. Ottawa went on to win 3-2.

Analysis:

This game had a slow start like the contest the night before. There weren’t many shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes. The Ducks were outshot 10 to 3 in the opening period and trailed 1-0. They responded with a better second period scoring twice and holding a one goal lead temporarily. It looked like this game might go to overtime, but a late goal for Ottawa gave them the win.

Special teams played a factor as Ottawa scored on one of their three power play attempts. Anaheim had two power plays, but didn’t convert on either one. One area Anaheim can work on is taking necessary and untimely penalties, which Head Coach Joel Quenneville said “We’ve got to get that out of our game” during post game interviews.

The Ducks also need to work on limiting quality scoring chances. They gave up 12 high danger chances and the Senators hit the post three times in the second period. Mrazek put in another quality start stopping 25 of 28 shots on net. Anaheim relied heavily on their goalies in the back-to-back homes games.

McTavish appears to have picked up his game again. He scored a goal and has points in his last two games. He almost had a goal against Boston as well which was wiped away due to goalie interference.

Team Notes/Stats:

Gauthier extended his home point streak to seven games(4 G + 9 A).

Kreider played in his 900th game.
