San Diego Gulls Biweekly Report 2
By Thomas Harrington
The San Diego Gulls played seven games over the past two weeks and had a record of 4-1-2, giving them a .500 record on the season. After struggling through the first two weeks of the season, San Diego played better over these past two weeks and their offense really came alive in several games. Scoring is getting done by committee, as nine different players have at least five points.
Gulls Shutout San Jose
The Gulls started things off by hosting the San Jose Barracuda. Yegor Sidorov opened the scoring early in the first, scoring in his second straight game. In the second, Tim Washe made it a 2-0 game for San Diego. In the third, Washe scored his second goal of the game, this one into an empty net, and the Gulls won 3-0. Ville Husso stopped all 27 shots he faced to get the shutout.
Firebirds Edge Gulls In OT
San Diego then traveled to Coachella Valley to face the Firebirds. The Firebirds scored twice in an eleven second span early in the first before Matthew Phillilps made it a one-goal game. Neither team scored in the second, but Justin Bailey scored his first of the season in the third to tie the game. Sidorov scored in his third straight game to put the Gulls up, but Coachella Valley responded with a goal of their own. The game went to overtime, and the Firebirds found the game winner and won 4-3.
San Diego Downed By Colorado
San Diego then returned home to host the Colorado Eagles. Phillips gave the Gulls the lead in the first, but the Eagles tied the game in the third. Colorado then scored early in the third, and then into an empty net late in regulation and won 3-1.
Gulls Double Up Silver Knights
San Diego then traveled to Henderson to face the Silver Knights. Nikolas Brouillard opened the scoring for the Gulls with his first of the season, and Tristan Luneau and Sasha Pastujov scored soon after to make it 3-0. Henderson scored two late goals, and the first period ended with San Diego up 3-2. Bailey scored the only goal of the second period, and Sidorov made it 5-2 late in the third. The Silver Knights scored again, but Nico Myatovic scored his first goal of the season with a minute left in the game, and the Gulls won 6-3.
Gulls Outshoot the Reign
The Gulls then hosted the Ontario Reign in a high scoring affair. Judd Caulfield scored a shorthanded goal in the first period, and Myatovic followed that with a shorthanded goal in the second period. Ontario made it 2-1 before Nathan Gaucher scored to restore the two-goal lead. That was Gaucher’s first goal of the season after missing the first several games with an injury. In the third period, the two teams kept trading goals. Washe made it 4-1 before Ontario responded. Bailey then scored on a breakaway, scoring with the Forsberg move to make it 5-2. The Reign responded with a goal of their own less than two minutes later. Washe scored his second goal of the game, but Ontario scored 18 seconds later. That was the final goal of the game, and San Diego won 6-4. Caulfield finished the night with a career-high four points.
Reign Beat Gulls In OT
San Diego then traveled to Ontario to face the Reign the next night. The game didn’t start well, as Ontario scored twice in the first period and then made it 3-0 early in the second. A little more than a minute later, Jan Mysak put the Gulls on the board. Before the period was over, Noah Warren scored his first career AHL goal. In the third period, with the goalie pulled, Washe scored to tie the game. In overtime, Ontario scored and won 4-3. Calle Clang started the game, but appeared banged up and left mid game. Husso ended up playing in about half the contest.
After the game Calle Clang took a leave of absence due to personal reasons. Tomas Suchanek was recalled from the Tulsa Oilers. Sam Colangelo was reassigned to San Diego with the return of Ryan Strome and Mikael Granlund in Anaheim.
Gulls Win A Thriller Against Bakersfield
Last night the Gulls hosted Baskerfield. Husso was in net and Colangelo was in the lineup. There was no scoring in the first period. Bakersfield took a 2-0 lead. Tim Washe scored late in the second period to get the Gulls on the board. Justin Bailey then tied the game on a one-timer just over six minutes into the third period. The Condors answered back and led 3-2 with just over 8 minutes to go. Colangelo then tied the game with just one second remaining in the third period. San Diego won a face-off with just four seconds to go and the puck came to Colangelo in the slot for the one-timer. In overtime, Baily scored his second of the game as he blew by the defense and scored for the game winner.
San Diego will play four games over the next two weeks. They’ll start out hosting the Abbotsford Canucks and the San Jose Barracuda. The Gulls will then travel to Coachella Valley, before returning home to host the Calgary Wranglers.
Washe continues to impress and when the Ducks need help at forward, he could get the call if Colangelo isn’t recalled first. He currently leads San Diego in goals and is second in points. Sidorov, Mysak, and Pastujov are all also playing well and could get the call if Anaheim runs into a slew of injuries at forward. On the backend, Luneau continues to be a dynamic player. Stian Solberg’s offensive game hasn’t been great this season, but he’s been impressive and could earn a callup as well at some point this season. In net, Husso continues to shine, and if anything happens to Lukas Dostal or Petr Mrazek, he’ll quickly be on his way to Anaheim.
After a rough start, it’s good to see the Gulls get things back on track. They are far from a perfect, team but better than their record showed through the season’s first two weeks. While they currently find themselves near the bottom of the Pacific Division, San Diego has games in hand on almost every team ahead of them in the standings and are only a handful of points out of second place.
