Anaheim’s Winning Streak Ends In Colorado

The Anaheim Ducks traveled to Colorado for a show down of the two top teams in the NHL. Lukas Dostal was in net against Scott Wedgewood.

Artturi Lehkonen scored in the opening minute of the contest. He scored from the left face-off circle with a one-timer that beat Dostal. Both teams had a power play chance in the opening period, but neither converted.

The Ducks responded toward the end of the period. Jacob Trouba got to the puck behind the net and found Leo Carlsson in front for the tap in score. The teams were tied up at one after the opening 20 minutes.

The Avs took the lead back just over halfway through the second period. Gabriel Landeskog got to a rebound in the slot and backhanded the puck past Dostal.

Early in the third period the Avs made it a 3-1 game. Ian Moore was called for delay of game when he shot the puck out of play from the defensive zone. Martin Necas then scored on the ensuing power play.

The Ducks pulled Dostal with about three and half minutes to go. Parker Kelly scored into the empty net and the Avs would go on to win 4-1.

Analysis:

The Avs came out flying right from the opening face-off. Colorado scored in the opening minute and pressured Anaheim at both ends of the rink. The Ducks pushed back in the final minutes and Carlsson was able to tie things up. In the middle frame, Colorado controlled the puck more, but only scored once. Anaheim was within striking distance, but a power play goal early in the third by Colorado proved insurmountable.

Leo continued doing Leo things with another goal in the first period. Dostal also played well stopping 32 of 35 shots by Colorado. He made some big saves in the first two periods to keep close to start the third.

Despite losing Anaheim was able to hang with the league’s best team. During even strength play the Ducks posted a CF% of 48.25% and a FF% of 50.62%. The Ducks put up 55 shot attempts to 59 for the Avs. Anaheim made a strong push with 17 shots on goal in third period, but they just couldn’t get one by Wedgewood.

Colorado won the special teams battle as they scored once in four power play attempts. Anaheim had two man advantages and didn’t score on either one. The Ducks have been much better on the power play this season, but the penalty kill is still a work in progress with just a 76.4% efficiency.

Another area Anaheim can cleanup is turnovers. They gave away the puck 16 times in this contest. The first turnover came in the opening minute when they couldn’t get the puck out of the zone and instead it ended up in the back of the net. Anaheim had trouble controlling the speed of Colorado throughout this contest.

All good things eventually come to an end. The winning streak is over, but Anaheim showed they have taken a huge step forward already this season and were able to compete with Colorado for most of this contest.

Team Notes/Stats:

Carlsson registered his 100th career point with a goal in the first period. He is the youngest played in Ducks team history to reach 100 points. He also has an 11 game point streak.

Cutter Gauthier and Carlsosn are tied for the team lead in goals with 11.

Anaheim is 6-0-0 when they score first. They are 5-4-1 when their opponent’s score first.

Alex Killorn was high sticked just over halfway through the third period and did not return. He appeared to be cut under his eye. To add insult to injury there was also no penalty called for the high stick.

Radko Gudas, Mikael Granlund, and Ryan Strome all skated at the morning skate and should be returning soon.
