Gulls Bi-Weekly Report 7

By Thomas Harrington

The San Diego Gulls played five games over the past two weeks and had a record of 2-2-1. All five games were played at home, San Diego’s longest homestand of the season. Things started well for the Gulls, as they won their first two games, but then lost their next three.

San Diego started things off by hosting the Iowa Wild. Playing in his first game since mid-December, Carson Meyer opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the contest. In the second period, Yegor Sidorov made it 2-0 and then Meyer scored his second goal of the night. In the third period, Iowa got on the board to make it 3-1, but Rodwin Dionicio restored the three-goal lead. Jan Mysak scored the final goal of the game and San Diego won 5-1.

Tucson then visited the Gulls for a pair of games. In the first game, Tyson Hinds opened the scoring before the Roadrunners tied the game. Carpenter scored his third goal in two games to put San Diego back on top before the first was over. Neither team scored in the second, and Sasha Pastujov gave the Gulls a two-goal lead late in the third. Tucson scored one more time with less than 30 seconds to go in the game and the Gulls won 3-2. The next night, Tucson started the scoring with two straight goals, before Nico Myatovic scored late in the first. In the second, Meyer tied the game, but the Roadrunners scored twice in the third and won 4-2.

Iowa then returned for another game. The Wild started the game with two straight goals, but Myatovic and Mysak both scored in the first to tie the game at 2-2. Tristan Luneau put San Diego on top in the second, but Iowa responded with two goals of their own. The Wild scored early in the third to take a two goal lead, but Meyer responded 20 seconds later to make it a 5-4 game. Iowa then scored two more times before Pastujov scored late and the Gulls lost 7-5.

The Gulls finished things off by hosting the Calgary Wranglers. Calgary scored the only goal of the first and made it 2-0 in the second before Pastujov scored for San Diego. Judd Caulfield scored to tie the game in what turned into a high-scoring third period. Forty seconds later, Calgary retook the lead but Luneau tied the game 25 seconds after that. A minute later the Wranglers scored again, but Pavol Regenda tied the game a couple minutes after that. Nathan Gaucher put the Gulls on top with a shorthanded goal, but Calgary tied the game with 13 seconds left in regulation. The game went to overtime, where the Wranglers scored and won 6-5.

San Diego will play four games over the next two weeks. They’ll start out by going on the road and heading to Calgary to face the Wranglers for a pair of games. The Gulls will then return to host the Toronto Marlies for a pair of games.

Sam Colangelo was recently reassigned to the Gulls after being with the Ducks for four games. If the Ducks need another forward, he’ll be heading right back up to Anaheim. Nikita Nesterenko is currently with the Ducks. On defense, Luneau and Hinds are the two most likely players to be called up.

Offensively, the Gulls played well over the past two weeks. In two of their losses, they scored a total of 10 goals. Most nights, that’s enough to win at least one if not both of those games. If they can clean up their defensive play, San Diego should bank a few more wins going forward.
