Ducks Claim Lassi Thomson; Place Trevor Carrick On Waivers

The Anaheim Ducks claimed Lassi Thomson off waivers today. The 6 foot tall, 190 pound defenseman played in 18 games with the Ottawa Senators during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. He recorded 5 assists and had an on ice rating of -10.

Thomson is a right-handed offensive defenseman with the potential of being a top 4 defensemen in the future. He has an offensive upside as he skates well and has a solid shot from the blue line. He is also good along the boards and in front of the net as he is strong on the puck. He is a two-way defenseman, but his defensive games does need some work as he will jump into the play which sometimes leads to offensive opportunities for the opposing team.

Thomson is an RFA at the end of the season and has a cap hit of $863,333. This is a low risk, high reward move for Anaheim. He could work out and be a full time player for the Ducks this season. If he doesn’t work out, then the Ducks still own his rights at the end of the season.

Carrick On Waivers:

The Ducks also placed Trevor Carrick on waivers. He appeared in 100 games with the Gulls during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, recording 42 points (11 G + 31 A) with a +3 rating and 98 PIM. In 2021-22 with San Diego, Carrick ranked second among club blueliners in points(30), goals(10) and was tied for second in assists(20). He spent last season playing 60 games with the Syracuse Crunch, where he recorded 46 total points(15 G + 31 A) and a +15 on ice rating. He is signed to a one-year, two-way contract with Anaheim for the 2023-24 season.
