Prospect Update: Trevor Janicke

Anaheim’s fifth round pick from the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, forward Trevor Janicke, completed his fourth season of NCAA hockey, all of them spent at the University of Notre Dame.

For the first time in his college career, Janicke was one of Notre Dame’s alternate captains. Overall, he played in 37 games and scored eight goals and 22 points. His goals and points dropped from his junior season when he scored 14 goals and 24 points, but he did set a new career high in assists with 14. Notre Dame was not an offensive powerhouse last season, as Janicke finished second in points and tied for first in goals on the team.

I had three expectations for Janicke last summer. First, I wanted him to set a new career high in points. Unfortunately, he missed that by two, but I am happy that he was at least able to set a new career high in assists. Second, I wanted him to continue to elevate his game as a center. He switched to the center position as a sophomore, and I think he continued to improve this season. Finally, I wanted him to sign his entry-level deal with Anaheim, and depending on the timing, join the Gulls on an ATO. Janicke has not signed his entry-level deal and missed this expectation. However, if he was not returning to college for a fifth season then he may have signed with the Ducks.

Similar to fellow Anaheim prospect Jack Perbix, Janicke will be playing in a fifth NCAA season because of the Covid-19 pandemic and returning to the University of Notre Dame. For the second consecutive season he’ll be one of the team’s alternate captains.

With a fifth NCAA season ahead of him, I have two expectations for Janicke. First, I expect him to set new career highs in goals and points. Second, I expect him to lead Notre Dame in scoring. They weren’t an offensive powerhouse last season, and he almost did. If he can improve his game enough this coming year, he should be their leading point producer.

Janicke is currently not signed to an entry-level contract. The Ducks own his rights until August 2024. If he has a strong final year of college hockey, I would expect the Ducks to sign him and have him play in San Diego in the 2024-2025 season. However, if he doesn’t progress this year, the Ducks will likely let his rights expire and allow him to become a free agent next summer. At that point he may join another team or could choose to join the Gulls on an AHL-only deal.

The next prospect update will be on Calle Clang.
