VIDEO: Ducks Get Blanked By The Sens
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks started their five game road trip in Ottawa against the Senators. Lukas Dostal got the start in net against Cam Talbot. Anthony Stolarz was out with an injury and did not make the trip.
Recap
The Senators opened the scoring in this one just under six minutes into the opening period. Nikita Zaitsev took a shot from the point and there was traffic in front. Parker Kelly redirected the point shot past Dostal for the early 1-0 lead.
The Ducks got the first power play of the game as Adam Henrique was taken out coming down the wing toward the net. Anaheim was able to generate some chances with the man advantage, but they couldn’t convert.
The Senators got a power play after Brett Leason called for interference. Ottawa then scored on the opening face-off on the power play. DeBrincat was left alone and had a wide open net to score in.
There was no scoring in the middle frame. The Ducks did get a power play in the middle of the period, but again were not able to cash in with the man advantage. Dostal did stop a 3-on-0 rush in the final minutes of the period to keep it a 2-0 game.
Ottawa would extend their lead in the third period on the power play. Alex DeBrincat would score his second on a deflection to put the Senators up 3-0.
The Ducks had a brief power play later in the period, but it would be cut short as Trevor Zegras was called for a roughing penalty. Ottawa had crashed the net and knocked Dostal back into the crease. Several Ducks responded and it was Zegras who got called for a penalty.
On the same sequence the puck went into the net and the play was reviewed by the refs. Ottawa was awarded a goal on the play, but then Anaheim challenged for goalie interference and the goal was taken off the board a result.
There was no more scoring in the third period and the Ducks ended up losing this one 3-0.
Analysis:
The Ducks didn’t have a good start to this game. They only had 5 shots on goal in the opening period and got down 2-0. They were better after the first period and had a few chances to score, but couldn’t break through tonight.
Anaheim lost the special teams battle against Ottawa. The Ducks had three power plays and didn’t convert on any of them. Ottawa was able to cash in twice on four of their power plays. The Senators also won the face-off battle winning 59% of the draws.
Despite being without two forwards for a good portion of the game, the Senators did a solid job of clogging up the neutral zone. They also blocked 21 shots limiting the Ducks opportunities to score. The bad news is the Ducks lost both games in the season series to Ottawa. The good news is they won’t be playing them anymore this season.
