Prospect Update: Jack Perbix

A fourth round pick from 2018, forward Jack Perbix just completed his sophomore year at the University of Minnesota, playing with fellow Anaheim prospects Jackson LaCombe and Blake McLaughlin.

After scoring two goals and seven points in 35 games as a freshman, Perbix doubled his goal total to four and recorded nine points in 30 games as a sophomore. He only missed one game all season. While not a significant statistical leap, it’s always good to see prospects improving their offensive production from one season to the next.

Perbix largely met my expectations from a season ago. First, I wanted him to play as much hockey as possible, and playing in 30 of 31 games was very good. In fact, in his first two years of college hockey, he’s only missed a total of three games. For a first or second-year player not known for his offensive output, that’s very impressive. Second, I wanted him to increase his shot output, as he only recorded 32 shots in his freshman year.

This past year, he bumped that up to 39, despite playing in five fewer games. While that’s not a huge statistical leap, he averaged over a shot per game as a sophomore, and that’s what I was hoping for. I was hoping that if he shot the puck more he’d score more goals, and that’s exactly what happened.

This coming year, Perbix will be returning to Minnesota for his junior season, and I have a couple of expectations for him. First, I want him to play in every game for Minnesota this coming season. Second, I want him to increase his shot output again. Finally, I want to see his offensive numbers take a bit of a jump. As an upperclassman, more will be expected from him and he’ll likely receive more ice-time as a result. That should translate into more points for Perbix.

Perbix is still a number of years away from having a shot at the NHL. He’s got at least one or two years of college hockey ahead of him. Following that, I’d expect him to join the Gulls for at least a season before the Ducks give him a look, so it will be some time before we see him in Anaheim, if he makes it there. The Ducks have a couple of other shutdown forwards in their system, and it will be interesting to see which of them pan out going forward.

Perbix is currently unsigned and will be until he’s done in the NCAA. That could come as early as next summer, but it wouldn’t shock me if Anaheim let him play in college for all four years before signing him to a pro contract. However, if his development stalls out, the Ducks could decide to let him become a free agent in the summer of 2023.

The next prospect update will be on Blake McLaughlin.
