VIDEO: Ducks Down Sharks In A Shootout 2-1
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks hosted the San Jose Sharks for their second game of back-to-backs. The Ducks went with the same lineup as the net before, except this time Ryan Miller was in net against Devan Dubnyk.
First Period
The Sharks would get off to a fast start as Logan Couture would score just 11 seconds into the game. The Ducks then got a power play and created several great chances, but couldn’t convert. The Sharks also got a power play when the Ducks were called for too many men on the ice after a poor line change. San Jose did not convert with the extra man.
Things got a little testy toward the end of the period. Rickard Rakell delivered a solid check on Radim Simek, who took exception. Max Comtois and Dylan Gambrell were close by and mixed it up. Both got two minutes for roughing. The period ended with the Sharks up 1-0.
Second Period
The Ducks were able to tie up the game in the middle frame. Isac Lundestrom scored as a point shot from Hampus Lindholm deflected off of him and past Dubnyk. Lundestrom looked like he was trying to jump out of the way and the puck ended up still hitting him redirecting right in the goal. Of course they had been working on that play for some time now.
Shortly after the goal, things got heated against this time Simek speared Adam Henrique in front of the San Jose net. Henrique confronted him and the two both sat for two minutes. The Ducks would get two power plays, but couldn’t convert despite some solid chances.
Third
The Ducks came out strong in the final period and outshot the Sharks 7-1 in the first 10 minutes. Anaheim created chances throughout the period, but just couldn’t find another goal. It would again take bonus hockey to declare a winner.
Overtime
The Ducks dominated the extra session. They had several chances where it look like they were going to score, but just missed. Rickard Rakell found Max Comtois cutting to the net, but the puck jumped off his stick. And the very end of the period there was a scramble at the San Jose net and somehow the puck didn’t go in. It would take shootout again to settle the game between these two teams.

Team Stats/Notes
Isac Lundestrom scored his first NHL goal.
Ryan Miller earn his 388th victory. He is one win from tying Dominik Hasek for 14th place in all-time wins for goalies.
Miller also earned his 60th shootout win. He needs one more to tie the NHL leader Henrik Lundqvist (61).
Ryan Getzlaf missed his second game with an lower-body injury.
Analysis
The Ducks got off to another poor start, but they only gave up one goal and played well for the remainder of the game. Even though the Ducks didn’t score on the power play, they created traffic in front of the net and had a few good scoring chances. The team showed some grit in this game too as Rakell delivered a big hit early and Henrique didn’t back down from that cheap spearing he received. Hopefully, the league looks at that play.
Anaheim also outshot San Jose and won the face-off battle. The overtime session was probably one of the best the Ducks have played. Yes, they didn’t score, but they owned the Sharks and could have easily scored at least twice. This was an overall solid effort by the team.
What’s Next?
The Ducks travel to Vegas to take on the Golden Knights on Tuesday at 7 PM PT.
