Ducks Promote Madden To Assistant GM
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks announced that Martin Madden has been promoted to an Assistant General Manager position. David Nonis, who was promoted to assistant GM in the summer of 2019, will still retain his position as well. The Anaheim Ducks will have two assistant GMs now per the Athletic’s Eric Stephens.
Madden has been with the Anaheim Ducks for the past 12 seasons. He mainly served as the Director of Amateur Scouting and has been a key part in the Ducks drafts and prospect development.
As an Assistant General Manager, Madden will manage the organization’s scouting efforts (professional and amateur) and assume an expanded role in a majority of hockey operations. He will continue to play an important role in the upcoming 2020 NHL Draft.
Madden has been known as being low-key in his work. He realizes the challenges of drafting and developing young players, but he is not only up for the challenge, but he also loves his job. His first NHL job was the scouting of some Midget AAA players for the Rangers on a part-time basis. He later obtained a full-time scouting job with the Rangers and then a position monitoring amateur players with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Madden has used advanced statistics and other measurable metrics when it came to drafting players while in New York and Carolina. He has continued to practice the same analysis while with the Ducks, which has led to several successful drafts.
Madden To Replace Murray?
Madden brings a different style to the table than the Ducks current General Manager Bob Murray. Madden likes to look at the whole picture of a player which includes game film, but also advanced statistics as well. Murray has mentioned before that he isn’t big on puck possession stats like Corsi or Fenwick.
Murray has been successful in drafting during his tenure as GM. We took a look at all his drafts from 2009 to 2019 here: Bob Murray’s Final Draft Grade.
The question is how much of that can be attributed to Martin Madden? If anyone is the “man behind Murray” it’s Madden. He has been an enormous part of Anaheim’s success in drafting during his 12 years with the organization.
The Ducks have signed Bob Murray to a 2-year contract extension which lasts through the 2021-2022 season. If he is not given another extension, expect Madden to be one of the leading candidates to become the next GM.
