VIDEO: Ducks Take Down The Kings
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks squared off against the Los Angeles Kings in the first edition of the Freeway Faceoff for the 2019-20 season. John Gibson was not unavailable to play due to illness according to the team. Ryan Miller would start in net, with Anthony Stolarz being called up from San Diego to back him up. Jack Campbell was in net for the Kings.
The Ducks would get off to a good start with two goals in the opening period. Nicolas Deslauriers would take a shot that would get blocked and sit in front of the Kings net. Derek Grant, who was providing a screen, would turn and fire the puck past Campbell for the early 1-0 lead. Later in the period, the Ducks would get a power play and Jakob Silfverberg would shoot low beating Campbell.
The Kings would respond in the second with a pair of goals. Kurtis MacDermid would score just over six minutes into the period to cut Anaheim’s lead to one. The Ducks would get one back almost a minute later as Hampus Lindholm found Carter Rowney at the side of the net for an easy tap in goal.
Later in the period, it appeared like the Kings would score off a deflection, but Erik Gudbranson hit the puck out of mid-air as it traveled downward towards the Anaheim net. Gudbranson knocked the net out of place and was called for delay of game. The Ducks killed off the penalty, but Nikolai Prokhorkin would score shortly after to pull LA back within one goal.
In the third period, the Kings would make a push to try to tie the game. In the final minutes, they pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, but Grant would score to seal the victory for Anaheim, 4-2.
Team Notes/Stats:
Jakob Silfverberg scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season.
The Ducks scored a rare power play goal on their only opportunity of the game.
Ironically Derek Grant scored the last goal of the game with 38 seconds remaining.
Carter Rowney posted his second multi-point game of the season. His goal was his second game-winning goal in his career.
Analysis:
The Anaheim Ducks responded well after being blanked by the Jets last Friday. The Ducks had a good start to the game and were able to hang on in the final period. Dallas Eakins changed up the personnel on the power play and it worked as the Ducks cashed in on their sole attempt with the man advantage. The contest wasn’t as physical as some of the past meetings between these two teams. There was only one fight during the game, but instead of it being on the ice, it was sadly between fans in section 227.
What’s Next?
The Ducks will host the Washington Capitals this coming Friday.
