VIDEO: Ducks Come Up Short In Calgary

Photo: AP

By Michael Walters

The Ducks continued their road trip against the Calgary Flames. Ryan Miller was in net against Mike Smith. Ryan Getzlaf was scratched due to an upper-body injury. He is listed as day-to-day.

First Period

The Ducks started off the game going shorthanded and killed off the penalty. Halfway through the period Max Jones had a good chance but was denied by Smith. A few minutes later Troy Terry also had a quality scoring chance, but Smith was again equal to the task. Miller then made a good save of his own against Austin Czarnik. There would be no score through the first 20 minutes.

Second Period

Miller would make a great save to start the period, but the Flames would then score on the next face-off. T.J. Brodie would score as his shot went off Jaycob Megna‘s knee and past Miller. The Ducks would get even when Smith would get caught out of position behind the net. Derek Grant would get the puck in the slot and put it in on net to tie the game. The Ducks ended the middle frame on the power play.

Third Period

Anaheim started the period on the power play, but couldn’t convert. Perry would get a partial breakaway and was hooked down. The Ducks went on the power play again, but couldn’t convert. Both teams exchanged chances throughout the period and eventually, Calgary would break through with just over three minutes to go. The Flames would get a 2-on-1 and the play would get broken up by Megna, but the puck would come back to Andrew Mangiapane, who would score. The Ducks pulled Miller in the final minutes, but Anaheim couldn’t get the tying goal.

Analysis

The Ducks played a solid game, but couldn’t get the breaks in this contest. The Flames first goal went off Megna’s knee and in. The second goal was a broken play where the puck happened to come back to the Flames forward for an easy score. Anaheim’s best line tonight was the Troy Terry, Adam Henrique, and Max Jones line. They sustained a solid forecheck and created several chances throughout the contest. Anaheim could have possibly earned at least a point tonight, but they played too defensively towards the end of the game and it cost them. The Ducks will look to regroup tomorrow against Edmonton.
