VIDEO: Ducks Earn Point In Winnipeg

By Michael Walters

The Anaheim Ducks continued their road trip against the Winnipeg Jets. John Gibson was in net against Connor Hellebuyck.

First Period

The Ducks got an early power play and made it count. Hampus Lindholm took a slap shot as the time on the power play was running down and Derek Grant redirected the shot past Hellebuyck. The Jets did answer right away as Nikolaj Ehlers scored just about a minute later to tie the game. The scored remained tied after one period of play despite the Jets outshooting the Ducks 17-4.

Second Period

Just 45 seconds into the middle frame Mark Scheifele scored to give the Jets a 2-1 lead. Winnipeg continued to work the forecheck in the period and outshot Anaheim 16-6. Gibson was tested often and was able to keep it a one-goal game heading into the third period.

Third Period

Halfway through the period Nick Ritchie broke in on a 2-on-1 and kept the puck himself shooting it on net. The shot was initially stopped by Hellebuyck but then appeared behind him sliding just barely over the goal line for the game-tying score. The Ducks held on for overtime in the final minutes when the Jets tried to make a late push to win the game.

Overtime

Less than two minutes left in the extra session, Kyle Connor would beat Gibson low on a 2-on-1 to win the game.

Analysis

The Ducks were very fortunate to even get one point tonight. The first two periods the Jets were constantly pressuring the Anaheim defense. Gibson faced 33 shots in the first 40 minutes of play. The Ducks were dominated in the faceoff circle as the Jets won 63% of the draws. Anaheim was also only able to get 18 shots on goal.  Gibson had to hold down the fort in this one and if not for him, the Ducks would have lost this game in regulation.
