The Anaheim Ducks started out their back-to-back road trip in Winnipeg against the Jets. Lukas Dostal was in net against Clay Stevenson. Nikita Klepov was a healthy scratch and Sam Colangelo drew in as a result.

Recap

Judd Caulfield opened the scoring late in the first period. Jeff Mallott blew around the Jets defense and tried to score on a backhand shot in close. Stevenson made the stop, but Caulfield was there to put the rebound back into the net.

Travis Mitchell and Adam Lowry dropped the gloves in the final seconds of the opening period. Ducks led 1-0 after the first period.

Tim Washe made it a 2-0 lead early in the second period. Mallott broke in to the left side of the net and found Washe in the slot for the score. Anaheim was up 2-0 after two periods.

Colangelo scored early in the third to make it a 3-0 lead. Beckett Sennecke took the puck behind the Winnipeg net and found Colangelo in front for the score.

Kyle Connor scored for the Jets halfway through the period to make it a 3-1deficit.

Mikael Granlund answered with a shot high from just inside the blue line that beat Stevenson over the glove.

Winnipeg pulled their goalie with a few minutes left and Nikita Nesterenko scored into the into empty to make it a 5-1 final.

Analysis:

The Ducks got off to a slow start with only one shot on goal in the first 12 minutes of play. They got a goal late in the first period and then goals early in the second and third period to build a 3-0 lead. The Jets did get on the board in the third, but the Ducks scored two more times to pull away.

Unlike the last two games, the Ducks did not score on the power play. They did only have one man advantage. Anaheim scored their first four goals during 5-on-5 play and then got an empty net score at the very end.

This game had a low shot on goal count with the Ducks edging the Jets 17 to 16. Anaheim posted a CF% of 44.93% CF% and FF% of 51.02% during 5-on-5 play.

The Ducks as a team rebounded after their loss to the Oilers. Dostal also played better and nearly shut out the Jets.

The fourth line came up big for the Ducks. All three players had two points. Caulfield and Washe both had a goal and an assist. Malott had two assists. That line got the Ducks going early in this contest scoring twice to build a 2-0 lead and Anaheim never looked back after that.

Team Notes/Stats:

Caulfield scored his first NHL goal.

Granlund scored his 200th career goal.

Sennecke became the youngest forward (20 years, 254 days) to record a point in the first four games of the season since Elias Pettersson.

What’s Next?

The Ducks travel to Calgary to face the Flames at 7 PM tomorrow.
