Prospect Update: Emile Guite

The Anaheim Ducks drafted forward Emile Guite in the fifth round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, 159th overall. He spent this past season playing for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the QMJHL with fellow Anaheim prospect Maxim Masse.

When he was drafted, I said that Guite might be the most intriguing prospect the Ducks drafted on the second day of the draft last year. He won the QMJHL Rookie of the Year Award in the 2023-2024 season after scoring 25 goals and 57 points in 61 games. However, the year before the draft, his offensive numbers dropped to just 16 goals and 30 points in 59 games. Guite had shown that he could score at a high level; the question was, would he be able to get back to it? This past season, he certainly did, scoring 32 goals and 65 points in 59 games, setting career highs in every offensive category. He finished second on the team in goals, behind only Masse, and fifth on the team in points. Guite also appeared in 20 playoff games and scored eight goals and 14 points. He helped the Sagueneens win the QMJHL Championship and qualify for the Memorial Cup. In four games at the Memorial Cup, Guite was held scoreless.

Guite is an offensive player who is both a good shooter and playmaker, but isn’t elite at either skill. However, if given enough time and space in the offensive zone, he’s going to make things happen that will often lead to the puck in the back of the net. Guite is also dangerous on the man advantage, scoring nine goals and 17 points on the powerplay this past season. If he wants to make it to the NHL, Guite is going to need to work on his overall game or become so good offensively that there’s no choice but to have him in the lineup.

As with many CHL players, including his former teammate Masse, Guite will be leaving the QMJHL and coming to the NCAA this coming season. He’ll be playing for the University of New Hampshire. New Hampshire wasn’t an offensive powerhouse this season; their leading scorer finished with 22 points, so Guite will hopefully be given a lot of offensive opportunities with his new team.

Setting expectations for players moving from the Canadian Juniors to the NCAA is difficult. Junior hockey in Canada is typically more of a high-skilled affair, and the focus is on getting as many games as possible. In college hockey, significantly fewer games are played, the competition is older, and there’s more of a focus on getting stronger. With that in mind, I have two expectations for Guite this coming season. First, I’d like to see Guite play in a majority of New Hampshire’s games. With fewer games overall, it’s imperative for younger players to get as much paying time as they can. Second, given how few goals they scored this past season, I’d like to see Guite finish in the top five in scoring on the team. His points per game will drop this coming season, there’s little question of that. However, as long as he can find his offensive game, he should be among the team’s offensive leaders.

Guite is still a number of years away from making it to the NHL. If he can tear up the NCAA over the next couple of seasons, that could come sooner than expected, but I think he’s likely to play college hockey for the next three seasons before turning pro. Guite will then likely join the Gulls for a season or two before getting a shot in Anaheim. So the earliest we are likely to see him with the Ducks is the 2031-2032 season.

Guite is currently unsigned and Anaheim holds his rights until August 2029. If he can adjust to and then excel at college hockey, he’ll absolutely get an entry-level deal before that deadline. However, if he really struggles to adjust to the NCAA, the Ducks may decide to let him become a free agent that summer instead.
