Prospect Update: Ethan Procyszyn

The Anaheim Ducks drafted forward Ethan Procyszyn in the third round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, 68th overall. This past season was his fourth and final year in the OHL, where he was the captain of the North Bay Battalion. It was his second season in a row being North Bay’s captain.

Procyszyn’s final OHL season was good but not great. He scored 31 goals and 59 points in 65 games, just slightly lower than the numbers he put up the previous year when he scored 34 goals and 64 points in 68 games. Procyszyn did lead North Bay in goals and points, while finishing second in assists. He had a slow start to the season with only four points in his 12 games, but got better as the year went on. In his final 10 games of the regular season, Procyszyn put up 13 points. He had a career-high five points in a game against Niagara in mid-February. The Battalion made the postseason, losing in the second round to Brantford. Overall, Procyszyn played in all 10 playoff games and scored four goals and five points.

I had three expectations for Procyszyn last summer, but he was only able to meet one of them. First, I wanted him to once again set career highs in goals, assists, and points like he had the previous year. He didn’t miss this by much, but he did miss it. Second, for him to be among North Bay’s offensive leaders. Leading them in goals and points means he definitely hit this one. Finally, I wanted him to finish in the top 30 scorers in the OHL. His 59 points were tied for 38th. So he finished within the top 40, but didn’t quite hit the top 30 I was hoping for.

Procyszyn will be turning pro this year and could see time in the AHL or ECHL. The Gulls have a number of strong forwards, but if Procyszyn can come in and play his physical brand of hockey, he could carve out a spot for himself in their lineup. I have two expectations for him this coming season. First, regardless of league, I want Procyszyn to be a physical presence on the ice. Second, I want him to play in a majority of the season’s games.

With Procyszyn turning pro this year, he has a chance to make it to the NHL in the next couple of years. For that to happen, he first needs to establish himself as an integral member of the Gulls and work his way up their lineup. He won’t be one of their top scorers, but if he can get time on the second and third lines and become known for his physical play, he could be an attractive callup option for the Ducks. However, if he struggles to adapt to professional hockey or spends time in the ECHL, then a shot at the NHL could be several years down the line for him.

In April, Procyszyn signed his three-year entry-level deal. It’s set to begin next season, and he’ll be a restricted free agent when it ends. He doesn’t have to make the NHL in the next three years to get extended when it ends. However, if he has, he’ll be looking at a one-way deal, possibly for a number of years. More likely, if he’s still in the AHL, he’ll get a two-way deal for one or two years.

The next prospect update will be on defenseman Alexis Mathieu.
