Prospect Update: Drew Schock

The Anaheim Ducks drafted defenseman Drew Schock in the fourth round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, 101st overall. He was a freshman at the University of Michigan this past season.

In Schock’s first season in the NCAA, he played in 38 games and scored a goal and 10 points, helping Michigan reach the Frozen Four in the NCAA Tournament. Michigan fell in double overtime, just missing out on the NCAA Championship Game. Schock isn’t known for his offensive ability, so his low point totals weren’t a surprise.

What was a pleasant surprise was him missing only two games all season. For a freshman, that’s a great accomplishment, even though he played a lot on the third pair. However, as the season went on, he did work himself onto the second pair at times. Schock recorded his first career assist in his first career NCAA game, and then followed that up with a goal and an assist in his second game.

Schock doesn’t really fit the mold of a Pat Verbeek type player. He was the only defenseman the Ducks drafted last year who was under six feet tall. He’s grown a little since then and is now listed as 6’0”. He’s a good skater and passer who can play on both special teams units. Schock also plays well in all three zones. He doesn’t have a high-end offensive ceiling, but if his development goes well, he could become a solid two-way defenseman who plays on the bottom pair.

Schock should be returning to the University of Michigan for his sophomore season. With his freshman year behind him, more will be expected out of Schock this coming year. First, I’d like to see him once again play in a majority of his team’s games. Missing only two games all season as a freshman is a great sign of how the team views him going forward. Second, even though he doesn’t have a high offensive ceiling, I’d like to see him put up goals and points this coming year.

Schock is several years away from making it to the NHL. I expect him to spend another two to three years playing NCAA hockey. If he plays well during that time, his next stop will then be San Diego. He will probably then play in the AHL for a couple of seasons before he gets called up to the NHL. So assuming he develops well, we could see him in an Anaheim uniform in the 2030-2031 season.

Schock is currently unsigned and Anaheim controls his rights until August 2029. If his play improves over the next three years in college, he’ll absolutely be signed to an entry-level deal before that deadline. However, if Schock doesn’t develop enough, the Ducks will likely let him become a free agent that summer.
