Granlund Fuels Ducks Past Flames In OT

The Anaheim Ducks continued their road trip in Calgary against the Flames. Ville Husso was in net against Devin Cooley. Nathan Gaucher was called up from San Diego, but did not play in this contest.

The Flames appeared to score in the opening minutes of the first period, but the Ducks challenged the play and it was ruled offside.

Calgary appeared to score again later in the period, but the play was called no goal and the video review couldn’t show enough evidence to overturn the call. The Flames looked like they got the puck behind Husso, but he used his right leg pad to pinch the puck against the net. There was no scoring in the first period.

The Flames scored in the first minute of the second period. Blake Coleman redirected a pass in the slot past Husso.

The Ducks answered about two minutes later. Mikael Granlund beat Cooley over the shoulder from the slot. The teams were tied at one after two periods.

Matvei Gridin scored to give the Flames a 2-1 lead just before the halfway point of the third period. He beat Husso with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle.

Grandlund tied the game back up on the power play with less than four minutes to go in regulation. A point shot was blocked and came to Granlund at the left side of the net and he scored from a severe angle.

The teams were tied at two at the end of regulation. In overtime, the Flames were called for too many on the ice and the Ducks had a power play for the final 57 seconds of overtime. Granlund would score the game winner with just over one second remaining on the clock. He completed the hat trick and the Ducks won 3-2 in OT.

Analysis:

Ducks give up the first goal, rally and comeback to win. Rinse and repeat.

The script was the same for Anaheim as it has been usually with a little twist. In the opening period the Flames could have been up 2-0, but instead found themselves in a tie. Their first goal was taken away in a close review with them just barely being offside. They almost scored a second time, but Husso covered the puck next to the post so during the review there wasn’t a clear angle of exactly where the puck was at.

The Ducks then got behind 1-0 and 2-1, but never gave up. Granlund put the Ducks on his back scoring twice in regulation and then getting the hat trick in overtime with the game winner. Grandlund has 19 goals on the season and has scored in four consecutive games.

John Carlson continues to be an assist machine. He had three assists in Vancouver and he has two more in this contest.

Overall, the Ducks out shot the Flames 33 to 25. The Anaheim power play has come alive lately as they scored twice in five attempts. Calgary had only one power play attempt and did not convert. The Ducks didn’t have a great start to this contest, but were able to hang in there and rally to win.

Team Notes/Stats:

Granlund has seven goals in his last four games. He became the sixth player in Anaheim history to earn a hat trick with an overtime goal.

Since John Carlson has debuted with the team, the Ducks are 7-for-22 on the power play (31.8% efficiency).

Anaheim earned their 25th comeback win for the the season, which is the second most in franchise history. The Ducks had 26 during the 2013-14 season.

Radko Gudas and Pavel Mintyukov were both injured in this contest. Gudas (lower-body injury) went to the locker room at the end of the second period and did not return. Mintyukov took a shot up high in the chest area in the third period. He went to the locker room for several minutes, but then returned to finish the game.

Troy Terry did not play in what was described as a maintenance day for him by Head Coach Joel Quenneville.

The Ducks travel to Edmonton to play the Oilers Saturday at 12:30 PM.
