Ducks Beat The Sabres In Overtime
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks returned to Honda Center for one home game against the Buffalo Sabres before going back on the road. Ville Husso was in net against Alex Lyon.
Buffalo got the scoring started with a goal by Alex Tuch just over three minutes into the contest.
Chris Kreider tied the game up on the power play just before the halfway point of the period. He scored on a one-timer from the right face-off circle.
A few minutes later and Jackson LaCombe would score on the power play with a blast from the blue line through traffic.
Josh Doan would even things up with less than three minutes to go in the first period. The teams were tied at two after the opening 20 minutes.
Beckett Sennecke put the Ducks back ahead int he opening minutes the second period. He brought the puck in the slot and beat Lyon low glove side.
Troy Terry then made it a 4-2 game with just over four minutes left in the middle frame. He had the puck in the slot and bead Lyon stick side with a backhand shot. The Ducks lead by two goals after two periods.
In the third period the Sabres rattled off three goals. Jack Quinn, Owen Power, and Zach Benson all scored to put Buffalo up 5-4 suddenly turning the tables on Anaheim.
In the final minutes of the period, the Ducks went on the power play and pulled Husso for the extra skater. Mikael Granlund scored from the slot to tie the game up and force overtime.
In the extra session Terry scored in a similar fashion as earlier in the game with another backhand shot over Lyon’s shoulder for the win. Anaheim ending up winning 6-5 in a wild affair.
Analysis:
Only one word to describe this game, INSANE! The Ducks gave up the first goal once gain, but then built a 4-2 heading into the third period. Anaheim looked like they were in control, but then they gave up three goals in about seven minutes of play and were down 5-4. Granlund scored on the power play in the final two minutes to tie the game and force overtime. In the extra session Terry scored to pull out the win.
The Ducks looked like they were in total to control to start the third period. Kreider and Jansen Harkins both had breakaways chances that likely would have put this game out of reach for Buffalo. Lyon came up with two big saves and Buffalo went on a roll scoring three times in the third period to take a one goal lead. But the Ducks never gave up, they tied the game late and won in OT.
One reason for the Anaheim win was the power play. The Ducks went 3-for-4 on the power play while the Sabres went 0-for-3.
Terry delivered another clutch performance with a goal that made it 4-2 and then the game winner in overtime.
Kreider, LaCombe, and Sennecke all played key roles in this contest as they each scored once and registered an assist.
The Ducks never seem to make it easy as they have a flare for the dramatic, but they pulled it off despite about a bad 10 minutes of play to start the third period. One thing is for sure you can never count these Ducks out in just about any game.
Team Notes/Stats:
