Ducks End Homestand On A Low Note
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks finished up their homestand against the St. Louis Blues. Ville Husso was in net against Joel Hofer.
There was no scoring in the first period.
Jordan Kyrou scored in the opening minutes of the second period to break the tie. He scored on a 3-on-1 shooting over Husso’s blocker
Jonathan Drouin scored on the power play halfway through the period to make a 2-0 game. He scored on a one timer from the right face-off circle.
Jimmy Snuggerud make it a 3-0 lead about two minutes later scoring from the right face-off circle.
With about three minutes to go in the period Ross Johnston hit Justin Holl into the boards. Tyler Tucker didn’t like the contact and confronted Johnston as they dropped the gloves. Johnston received a 5 minute major major for boarding and another 5 minutes for fighting. Tucker received 2 minutes for instigating, 5 minutes for fighting, and a 10 minute misconduct penalty. The Blues had a power play for the final minutes of the period, but did not score.
Blues still lead 3-0 in the third period. Anaheim pulled Husso with over five minutes left to go and Pius Suter scored into the empty net to make it 4-0, which was the final score.
Analysis:
The Blues extended their winning streak to four games by beating the Ducks last night. Anaheim couldn’t get much going as they were outshot 35 to 22. The Ducks put up a CF% of 47.22% and FF% of 45.68% at even strength. The Blues created 16 high danger chances.
The Ducks had trouble getting quality chances as about half of their shots came from the perimeter. Anaheim had five power play chances, but didn’t convert on any of them managing just two shots on net.
The Blues clogged up the neutral zone all night long and when the Ducks were attacking, St. Louis kept them to the perimeter. Anaheim also turned over the puck 18 times which didn’t help their cause. Anaheim played decent in the first and third periods, but the second period did them in.
One player who has disappeared lately is Mason McTavish. He has just two assists in his last nine games. He has been great in the shootouts, but he needs to get back to scoring soon.
Today we will see if any further discipline comes from Johnston’s hit on Holl into the boards.
Team Notes/Stats:
Anaheim finished the homestand going 5-2-0 after the Olympic break.
Mikael Granlund returned to the lineup after injury.
John Carlson (lower-body) and Troy Terry (upper-body) will both go on the road trip. Hopefully one or both of them are able to play.
Anaheim is still in first place in the Pacific Division since Vegas also lost last night.
What’s Next?
The Ducks travel to Winnipeg to play the Jets at 5:30 PM tomorrow.
