Anaheim Acquires John Carlson From Washington
By Michael Walters
In case you were sleeping last night and missed it (like me) the Anaheim Ducks acquired John Carlson from the Washington Capitals shortly after 10 PM local time in California. The trade happened so late that Carlson was also asleep and didn’t find out about the trade until early this morning. So if you missed the trade last night, don’t feel bad. You, me, and Carlsson all did. Good morning and happy Friday!
The full deal ended up with Anaheim sending a conditional first-round pick in either the 2026 or 2027 NHL Draft and a 2027 third-round selection. If Anaheim makes the playoffs this season, then the conditional first-round pick will be Anaheim’s 2026 first-round pick. If Anaheim fails to qualify for the playoffs this season, then Anaheim could either still transfer its 2026 first-round pick or instead transfer its 2027 first-round pick to Washington.
Analysis:
Carlson is a veteran presence which will immediately upgrade the Anaheim blue line. He has 10 goals and 36 assists in 55 games this season. The 6’3″ 220 lbs defenseman is an experienced player who won the Stanley Cup back in 2018. He is a threat to score during even strength play and can quarterback a power play. He has nine power play points this season.
With him being a right shot defensemen this will certainly affect Drew Helleson‘s and Ian Moore‘s playing time. The Ducks do not have to make room for Carlson, however, as the 23-player limit was lifted last night at 9PM California time.
Carlson’s contract is up at the end of this season, so it will be interesting if he is purely a rental or if the Ducks will sign him to an extension. Giving up a first round pick for a rental player is a risky move if he doesn’t come back next season. Regardless this move signals Pat Verbeek wants to make a strong playoff push for the remainder of the season.
General Manager Pat Verbeek had this to say about the trade, “John Carlson brings leadership, character, a high hockey IQ and a presence to our lineup. We are very excited to add a Stanely Cup winner to complement our group and make a big push down the stretch.”
