Ducks Rally Again and Win In The Shootout

The Anaheim Ducks continued their homestand against the Calgary Flames. Lukas Dostal was in net against Devin Cooley.
The Flames scored first about halfway through the first period. Joel Farabee redirected a pass from Ryan Lomberg past Dostal. Calgary led 1-0 after the first period.
Cutter Gauthier tied up the game just over halfway through the second period. Cutter took a shot which went off Cooley’s shoulder and then up in the air. The puck came back down on Cooley’s back and deflected into the net.
The Flames responded later in the period on the power play. Yegor Sharangovich scored from the right face-off circle through traffic. Calgary was up 2-1 after two periods.
Gauthier tied the game up halfway through the third period. He scored on a one-timer from the right face-off circle. The teams remained tied and would need bonus hockey.
In overtime, the Ducks had numerous chances to win the game, but Cooley denied them at each chance. The contest would need a shootout.
Leo Carlsson made a nice move faking out Cooley and McTavish out waited Cooley to score. Nazem Kadri scored the lone shootout goal for Calgary in the losing effort. The Ducks went on to win 3-2.
Analysis:
Another game the Ducks get behind and another game they rally to win. Anaheim rallied down 1-0 and 2-1 to force bonus hockey. In the overtime the Ducks were all over the Flames almost winning the game. In the shootout Carlsson and McTavish scored to secure the extra point for Anaheim.
The Ducks didn’t play great in the first half of this contest, but then turned it on the second half. Sound familiar? A lucky bounce on the first Gauthier goal kept the Ducks in this contest heading into the third period. Gauthier then came through on the power play to force overtime. The Ducks posted a CF% of 50% and FF% of 47.13% at even strength.
Both teams scores on the power play. Calgary scored in three power play attempts and Anaheim scored once in five attempts.
The line of Chris Kreider, Carlsson, and Gauthier came up huge for Anaheim tonight. Gauthier scored twice, but Kreider and Carlsson each came close to scoring at least once in this contest. Carlsson did score a filthy goal in the shootout. Sennecke also continues to show he can do more than just score. He had an assist on Gauthier’s game tying goal. He now has 30th assists in his rookie season.
Team Notes/Stats:
Sennecke recorded his 30th assist tying the second most assists by a Ducks rookie in a season.
Jackson LaCombe reached 100 career NHL points.
Ryan Strome was scratched due to being under the weather according to Head Coach Joel Quenneville.
Troy Terry has been dealing with an upper-body injury.
Mikael Granlund has an upper-body injury and should be back soon.
Frank Vatrano has been skating and is close to returning.
