Ducks Earn A Point In Columbus
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks finished their road trip in Columbus against the Blue Jackets. Ville Husso was in net against Jet Greaves.
Columbus scored first just over eight minutes into the first period. Zach Werenski got the puck in the slot and beat Husso glove side.
Ryan Strome scored to get the Ducks on the board early in the second period. Strome and Ryan Poehling did a give and go play with Strome scoring from the slot.
The Blue Jackets then answered back with two goals. Werenski scored less than 30 seconds later in the slot beating Husso glove side for the second time.
Boone Jenner then scored 19 seconds later on a backhand shot after his first attempt was stopped by Husso.
Mikael Granlund then answered back about a minute later. He got the puck in the slot and beat Greaves stick side. Anaheim was down 3-2 after two periods.
Jackson LaCombe scored with less than four minutes to go tie up the game. He took the puck below the goalline and banked a shot off the back of Greaves’ mask and in.
Bonus hockey would be needed in this one and Adam Fantilli would score in overtime to give Columbus the win. He used Olen Zellweger as a screen and shot between his legs beating Husso for the game winning goal.
Analysis:
The Ducks got down 1-0 in the first period, but they also hit the post three times. Cutter Gauthier nearly scored in the final seconds as he beat Greaves low, but the puck came off the far post and back to Greaves. The second period saw both teams score twice and Columbus held a 3-2 lead. LaCombe scored an amazing goal late in the third period to tie the game. The Blue Jackets then pulled out the win in overtime.
At even strength the Ducks put up 51 shot attempts to 50 for the Blue Jackets. The each had 28 shots on goal. Anaheim posted a CF% of 50.5% and a FF% of 51.56% at even strength. Overall Anaheim played well at even strength, but a couple of defensive breakdowns led to two goals with 19 seconds.
Special teams wasn’t much of a factor in this one. Anaheim went 0-for-4 on the power play and Columbus went 0-for-2. The Ducks power play has been ice cold like a snowman lately.
LaCombe had an excellent game scoring to force overtime and then nearly scored a second goal to win the game in overtime. The Ducks were able to pull out a point with that goal, but things may have been difficult if one of their three posts would have gone in during the first period.
