The Anaheim Duck continued their homestand against the Boston Bruins. Lukas Dostal was in net against Joonas Korpisalo.

The Ducks opened the scoring just over two minutes into this contest. Ross Johnston got to a rebound at the side of the net and threw it on net. His shot deflected off Korpisalo and right to Jansen Harkins in front, who swept the rebound into the net.

Radko Gudas then scored on a point shot which deflected off Fraser Minten and past Korpisalo. Ducks led 2-0 just over six minutes into the opening period.

Boston went on the power play and Morgan Geekie scored with about five minutes left. It appears the puck may have been hit with a high stick, but after a quick review the goal stood.

And the end of the period Frank Vatrano and Alex Steeves went at it along the boards and both received five minutes for fighting. The Ducks led 2-1 after the first period.

The Ducks appeared to extend the lead to 3-1 just before the halfway point of the second period. Mason McTavish scored, but the officials waived off the goal as he made contact with Korpisalo in the crease prior to making the save.

Anaheim then scored on the power play with just over six minutes to go in the middle frame. McTavish took a point shot and Ryan Strome redirected the shot over Korpisalo for the score.

Michael Eyssimont scored with just over minute to go to get the Bruins back within one. Dostal was screen inadvertently by Olen Zellweger and Eyssimont scored glove side as a result. The Ducks led 3-2 after two periods.

Boston would tie up the game with another power play goal with just over 12 minutes left in his contest. Geekie scored his second of the game to draw the Bruins even.

Ian Moore put Anaheim ahead with just over four minutes to go. Moore took a shot through traffic and it ended up in the back of the net. Boston pulled their goalie in the final minutes, but they couldn’t tie the game. Anaheim held on for a 4-3 win.

Analysis:

The Ducks got off to a solid start building a 2-0 lead early in the first period. The Bruins did answer to get within one goal before the opening period was over. There was little bit of controversy in the second period as the Ducks appeared to go up 3-1, but McTavish’s goal was wiped off the board for goalie interference. The Ducks shook that off and Strome scored to officially make it a 3-1 contest.

To the Bruins credit they didn’t give up. Boston scored at the end of the second period and again in the beginning of the third period to tie the game up. The Ducks were able to pull out a win with a late goal by Moore in the third period.

Boston played a solid game at even strength posting a CF% of 52.67% and a FF% of 55.06%. The Bruins put-up 69 shots attempts to 62 for the Ducks. In terms of special teams, Boston scored twice on the power play and Anaheim scored once.

The difference in this contest was largely in part to the play of Dostal. He stopped a 2-on-0 towards the end of the first period and made 36 saves on 39 shots on goal. He probably would have made another save on the Bruins second goal if he wasn’t snowed by Zellweger on accident.

McTavish seemed to come back to life offensively in this contest. He had two assists and nearly scored, but the goal was erased by a questionable goalie interference call.

The Ducks got some offense from the defense with goals by Gudas and Moore. However, Anaheim still needs to clean things up defensively as they continue to give opponents quality scoring chances. Dostal bailed out the team multiple times in this contest to help them earn the two points.
