Ducks Rally Past Mammoth In OT

By Michael Walters

The Anaheim Ducks returned home to face the Utah Mammoth. The Ducks looked to get back in the win column after going 0-3-0 on their recent road trip. Lukas Dostal was in net against Karel Vejmelka.

The Ducks scored first with just over four minutes to go in the first period. Jackson LaCombe and Ryan Strome did a give-and-go play with LaCombe scoring in the slot on a one timer.

Ross Johnston and Liam O’Brien then dropped the gloves. It was a spirited bout as O’Brien ripped open Johnston’s jersey near the name plate. The Ducks led 1-0 after the opening frame.

Utah tied up the game towards the end of the second period. Dylan Guenther scored from the left face-off circle to make it a 1-1 game after two periods.

The Mammoth took the lead in the third period on a one timer by Logan Cooley that hit Drew Helleson in the leg and deflected past Dostal.

In the final minutes the Ducks pulled Dostal and the Ducks would tie the game up with just 4.1 seconds left. Cutter Gauthier took a shot which deflected off the post and then came to Troy Terry at the side of the net for a tap in goal. Bonus hockey would be needed.

In overtime Beckett Sennecke found Olen Zellweger at the side of the net for a slam dunk goal to give Anaheim a 3-2 win.

Analysis:

This game had a slow start to it. Utah didn’t register a shot on goal until about 12 minutes into the first period. Anaheim only had two shots on goal at that time as well. The play picked up when the Ducks got on the board first at the end of the opening period and Johnston dropped the gloves.

Utah then scored in the second period to tie the game and then took the lead in the third. It looked like the Ducks were going to lose their fourth game in a row, but Anaheim was able to tie the game with just 4.1 seconds left. Sennecke kept put in the zone or else the game would have been over. In overtime he made a great pass drawing Vejmelka out of position so Zellweger could score into a wide open net.

This wasn’t the best game for Anaheim, but they found a way to win when they needed it the most. The Ducks put up 26 shots on goal to 19 for the Mammoth. Anaheim posted a CF% of 56.57% and FF% of 57.14% at even strength. There wasn’t much special teams play as both teams had one power play, but didn’t convert.

One player to keep an eye on is Mason McTavish. He has struggled recently as he hasn’t registered a point in his last four games. He was also placed on the fourth line in the latter stages of this contest.

Team Stats/News:

LaCombe scored his first goal of the season.

Zellweger became the fourth defensemen in Ducks team history to score an overtime goat at age 22 or younger.

The Ducks are back in first place in the Pacific Division.
