Anaheim Beats Vegas In Overtime
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks took on the Vegas Golden Knights on the road tonight. Petr Mrazek got the start against Akira Schmid.
Vegas came out strong in the first period and scored just over five minutes into this one. William Karlsson took the puck behind the net and then found Brett Howden in the slot for the score.
Anaheim responded later in the first period with a goal by Frank Vatrano. He redirected a point shot form Olen Zellweger to tie things up before the first period was over.
In the second period, Leo Carlsson scored twice to give Anaheim a 3-1 lead. First Troy Terry found Carlsson breaking in on the net and Leo flipped a backhand shot over Schmid. Leo then scored in close towards the end of the period with a low shot.
The Golden Knights then scored twice in the third period to even the game up. Pavel Dorofeyev scored for the slot on the power play to get Vegas within a goal. Kaedan Korczak scored with about five minutes to go to tie the game.
Bonus hockey would be needed to determine a winner. Jacob Trouba would score with less than a minute go in overtime to give the Ducks the victory. He got the puck and scored from the slot with a low wrist shot.
Analysis:
It was another wild game from the Anaheim Ducks. Vegas came out strong in the first period, but Anaheim was able to battle back to tie things up at the end of the first period. In the middle frame it was the Leo Carlsson show as he scored twice to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead. In the third period it was all Vegas as they scored twice to tie the game with their strong forecheck. In overtime the Ducks pulled off the win with elite goal scored by Jacob Trouba.
Anaheim ended up being outshot 39 to 29 in this one. At even strength Vegas held a 64 to 58 shot attempt advantage. The Ducks posted a CF% of 47.54% and FF% of 50.00%. Anaheim had an extremely rough third period as Vegas put 28 shot attempts to just 13 for the Ducks. Mrazek deserves some credit as he stopped multiple quality scoring chances despite giving up two goals in the final frame.
In terms of special teams, Vegas scored once in three power plays. The Ducks only had one power play in this contest and they should have had more. Vegas got away with murder in the third period. They had a face-off violation which wasn’t called and a slash on Chris Kreider negating a breakaway which wasn’t called. Despite that though the Ducks weathered the Vegas storm and were able to prevail in overtime.
Team Notes/Stats:
With the win the Ducks are still in first place in the Pacific Division. Anaheim has won six games in a row.
Leo Carlsson extended his point streak to nine games. He is the first player in Ducks history with 40 career goals at age 20 or younger.
Jacob Trouba has 4 goals in his last 8 games for the Ducks. That’s the same number of goals he’d scored in his previous 165 regular-season games since March 2023.
