Ducks Win A Wild Contest In Boston
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks continued their road trip in Boston against the Bruins. The Ducks went with the same lineup as last game. Chris Kreider was still out due to being ill. Petr Mrazek was in net against Joonas Korpisalo.
The Bruins scored just over two minutes into this contest. Casey Mittelstadt got to a rebound at the side of the net for an easy tap in score.
The Ducks answered back about six minutes later. Drew Helleson shot the puck from the right face-off circle and it deflected off a Boston player and behind Korpisalo. The game was tied at one after the first period.
The Bruins took the lead back halfway through the second period. Morgan Geekie scored through a screen in the slot to make it 2-1 Boston.
Anaheim then tied it back up at two. Jackson LaCombe found Cutter Gauthier and he scored on a wrist shot from the high slot.
Ross Johnston and Tanner Jeannot dropped the gloves and both received five minutes for fighting.
Jacob Trouba then scored on a rebound about four minutes later to make it a 3-2 Anaheim lead.
Boston did respond on the power play with less than three minutes to go on the power play in the middle frame. Mason Lohrei scored on a point shot through traffic. The teams were tied at three after two periods.
In the third period, the Ducks scored twice to take a 5-3 lead. Troy Terry danced around two defenders on the power play and fed the puck to Mikael Granlund in the slot for the one timer. A few minutes later Sam Colangelo would have a deflected puck come to him in the slot and he beat Korpisalo low for the goal.
With less than six minutes to go, the Bruins answered with two goals just 25 seconds apart. David Pastrnak scored on the power play and then Geekie scored his second goal on a one-timer during a 2-on-1.
Terry regained the lead for Anaheim just 30 seconds later. Nikita Nesterenko found Terry right in front of the net for the tap in score. Boston then pulled their goalie and Granlund scored with about two minutes left in the game. Anaheim went on to win 7-5.
Analysis:
Another Mrazek start and another wild win. In his first game the Ducks won 7-6 and tonight they won 7-5. Mrazek seemed to be in a decent position to win with a 5-3 lead, but then Boston scored twice in 25 seconds to tie the game up. Thankfully Terry was able to answer right back and Anaheim hung on for the win. To say Mrazek has been shaky is an understatement, but he is undefeated with 2-0-0 record.
The Nesterenko, Granlund, and Terry line combined for 11 total points(3 goals + 8 assists). They had a 60.2% expected goals percentage during 5-on-5 play. Granlund got the monkey off his back scoring his first and second goals of the season. Terry deked two Boston players out of their jock straps as he fed Granlund for his first goal on the night.
At even strength, Anaheim posted a CF% of 41.35% and FF% of 43.48%. Boston held a 78-55 shot attempt advantage during even strength play. The Bruins had 41 shots on goal to 30 for the Ducks. Boston created 21 high danger chances to 11 for the Ducks. It wasn’t the greatest even strength play from Anaheim, but they got some puck luck with a couple of bounces which resulted in two goals.
The Ducks were able to score on the power play once in three attempts. Anaheim is 1-for-8 on the man advantage without Kreider. The Ducks are 5-for-20 with Kreider on the power play. Anaheim gave up two goals both times while shorthanded. The power play has been better overall this season, but the penalty kill is still a work in progress.
Team Notes/Stats:
Radko Gudas (lower-body) was injured in the first period and did not return in this contest. He is considered day-to-day.
The Ducks have scored the most goals (7) at TD Garden since the Hurricanes beat the Bruins 7-1 back on January 18th, 2022.
Anaheim has already scored seven goals twice in a contest this season. The Ducks only scored seven goals twice in their previous three seasons.
Anaheim is 4-0-0 when they score more than one goal this season. When they only score one goal they are 0-2-1.
Granlund had a career high five points (2 G + 3 A), which ties the Ducks team record for points in a game. Last player to do it was Ryan Getzlaf on 11/24/15 again Calgary with five assists.
Granlund and Nesterenko became the first Ducks teammates with four or more points in the same game since Adam Henrique and Nick Ritchie on February 23rd against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Gauthier became the 2nd fastest Ducks player in the past decade to score 5 goals to start a season (7 games). Frank Vatrano scored 5 goals in 6 games in the 2023-24 season.
It’s very early in the season, but Anaheim is in third place in the Pacific Division.
