By Mike Walters
The Anaheim Ducks traveled to Seattle to face the Kraken to start the 2025-26 NHL season. Lukas Dostal got the start in net against Joey Daccord.
Vince Dunn started the scoring for Seattle just over two minutes into this contest. He scored on a wrist shot from the left circle.
The Ducks answered back about two minutes later when Mason McTavish found Beckett Sennecke by the side of the net and he redirected the puck past Daccord. Later in the period in appeared Anaheim took a 2-1 lead when Olen Zellweger crashed the net, but the goal was overturned. The officials ruled Zellweger had pushed Daccord’s pad over the goal line. The teams remained tied at 1-1 at the end of the first period.
Mason Marchment made is a 2-1 game just under four minutes into the second period. He scored on a one timer from the slot. Seattle held a 2-1 lead after two periods.
In the third, Jared McCann scored early in the period to make it a 3-1 lead for Seattle. He scored on one-timer from the bottom left circle. With just under three minutes to go, Dostal was pulled for the extra attacker, but the Ducks wouldn’t score again. Seattle won by a 3-1 final.
Analysis:
The Ducks came out flying putting up 17 shots on goal in the first period to just five for Seattle. Despite the second goal being called back, Anaheim had all the momentum in the first period. The rest of the game was a different story as Seattle outshot Anaheim 26 to 19. They scored two early goals, one in the second and one in the third to cruise to a 3-1 win. Overall the Anaheim’s puck possession numbers were solid with a CF% of 59.5% and FF% of 52.81% at even strength.
Anaheim’s best line was of Cutter Gauthier, Mason McTavish, and Beckett Sennecke. They combined for eight shots on goal and the Ducks only score. Alex Killorn and Leo Carlsson both put up four shots on goal, but didn’t score. Head Coach Joel Quenneville did shuffle the lines later on in his contest to try to generate more offense.
The bottom defensive pairings of Pavel Mintyukov and Drew Helleson struggled in this contest. They were on ice from some of the Kraken’s goals and both finished with a -2 on ice rating. Anaheim should switch up the pairings or even call another defensemen up from San Diego.
Special teams wasn’t much of a factor in this contest. Anaheim had one power play and Seattle had two, but neither team converted.
Team Notes/Stats:
Sennecke became the seventh Ducks teenager to score in his NHL debut, joining Leo Carlsson (Oct. 19, 2023), Mason McTavish (Oct. 13, 2021), Jamie Drysdale (March 18, 2021), Max Comtois (Oct. 3, 2018), Kyle Palmieri (Nov. 3, 2010) and Stanislav Chistov (Oct. 10, 2002).
Sennecke’s goal was just 4:11 into his NHL debut, which marked the eighth fastest in NHL history by a teenager in his debut and quickest since Comtois did it in 49 seconds in 2018.
Ryan Strome was placed on the IR just before the start of yesterday’s contest.
