Ducks Place Henrique On Waivers
By Michael Walters
This morning the Anaheim Ducks placed Adam Henrique according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Henrique played in 16 games this season registering four total points(3 goals + 1 assist) and had an on ice rating of -8. He was also benched by Head Coach Dallas Eakins after the January 30th game against St. Louis where he played poorly. He didn’t register any points in that game and was a -3. Eakins has stated that he wouldn’t accept underachieving or subpar play this season. Eakins also moved Henrique to the wing position in an attempt to help pick up his game, but to no avail.
Shortly after Henrique was benched, we received word that the New Jersey Devils were one team that was interested in him. The difficulty in trading Henrique is due to his under performance and contract. He still has three more years after this season on his deal with an annual salary of $5.825 million.
In order to move him, the Ducks would have likely have had to retain some of the salary or add a younger player to the deal, which General Manager Bob Murray would not likely have wanted to do. As a result, Murray’s last option was to place Henrique on waivers in hopes of someone picking up him to clear the cap space.
If the Devils are still interested they can claim Henrique off waivers. They have about $13 million in cap space, so the room is there if they still want him back.
The question now is what will Anaheim do if he is not claimed off waivers tomorrow. We recently discussed the Henrique situation on the podcast.
