Avalanche Sign Tyson Jost

By Richard Gonzalez

On March 29th, 2017, the Colorado Avalanche have announced they have signed 2016 first round (10th overall) pick Tyson Jost (19 years old) to a three-year entry-level contract. Jost is a left wing who shoots left. He’s approximately 5’11” and 191 pounds. Per CapFriendly.com, Jost will make an average of 925K with a cap hit of 925K, which will expire 2018-2019.

Per the Colorado Avalanche, President and General Manger Joe Sakic said, “Tyson is an all-around player. He competes, plays the game hard and is reliable at both ends of the ice. He just finished a strong year at North Dakota and we’re looking forward to seeing him in an Avalanche sweater.”

Jost was a member and captained the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Major Midget league. Jost’s best season with the Penticton Vees was the 2015/2016, where he would score 104 points (42 goals, 63 assists) in 48 games. Jost led the league in assists and was third overall in points.

In 2016, Jost was selected to represent and captain team Canada in the IIHF World U18 Championship. Jost lead the entire tournament in points with 15 in 7 games, breaking Connor McDavid‘s record of 14 points. Canada did not place; however, Jost was still named best forward of the tournament and selectedAll-StarAll Star team.

2016/2017, Jost completed his freshman year playing for the University of North Dakota. Jost played 33 games scoring 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists). Jost would be second on the team in points and tied for first in goals.

I think Jost will add youth to the Avalanche’s youth movement and the speed which the team seems to be building on. He sees the ice on both ends and looks for those soft passes. He also has the ability to finish as well. This is going to be a big jump for Jost to play but with the season the Avalanche are having why not give him some ice time and see what he has. Jost can learn a lot from the NHL experience he’s going to get that will help him crack the roster from next season. I’d expect Jost to wear number 72 as he did at the Avalanche’s annual development camp which was on July 6th, 2016, however he is going to go with 27 instead. Per, Adrian Dater, Jost will likely start his professional hockey career on Friday when the Avalanche take on the St. Louis Blues.

The best of luck to you Tyson Jost!
