The Anaheim Ducks started the road trip in Boston against the Bruins. Cam Fowler and Troy Terry both drew back into the lineup after being in the COVID protocol. Geoff Ward coached the team with Dallas Eakins still in the protocol. John Gibson was in net against Tuukka Rask.

Recap

Ducks got an early power play, but didn’t convert. Gibson got tested right after the penalty expired and made a solid save.

Almost halfway through the preiod Oskar Steen laid a big hit on Nicolas Deslauriers against the boards, which knocked him out of the game. A major penalty was called originally on the play, but the refs reviewed it and reduced it to a minor penalty. The Ducks did score on the power play. Ryan Getzlaf took a slap shot and it deflected off Derek Grant into the goal.

Ducks almost scored again later in the period as Sam Carrick had a good chance, but an early whistle saved the Bruins. Anaheim held a 1-0 advantage after the first period.

Trevor Zegras got sent to the box early to start the second period. Isac Lundestrom would score shorthanded as he slipped the puck between Rask’s legs and it had just enough momentum to slide past the goal line.

David Pastrnak would then score to get Boston on the board. He beat Gibson stick side just under the cross bar.

Things started to heat up during a TV timeout. Nick Foligno said something to Jamie Drysdale and John Gibson took exception to it. Gibson approached Foligno and had some choice words for him.

Shortly after that exchange, Sam Carrick and Foligno would drop the gloves.

Getzlaf would make it a 3-1 game. He used the defender as a screen and beat Rask on his stick side.

Taylor Hall would score for Boston before the period was over to make it a 3-2 game.

The Ducks had an early power play to start the third period, but didn’t convert. Shortly after the power play, Troy Terry would break in and score shooting the puck between the defenders leg’s and then past Rask.

Anaheim would then lose Josh Mahura for the rest of the game. He fell awkwardly and crashed sideways into the net. It took a while for him to get up and skate off the ice.

Halfway through the period Greg Pateryn would launch a rocket of shot to make it a 5-2 game.

Erik Haula would get one more for Boston, but it wasn’t enough and Anaheim won 5-3.

Analysis:

The Ducks had solid outing against a contending team. Anaheim was able to build an early 2-0 lead and it was Boston who was playing catch up the rest of this contest.

Anaheim had 11 shots on goal in 16 attempts to the opening period. Boston had just 5 shots on net in 13 attempts. The Bruins did outshoot the Ducks 21 to 16 after the first period, but they couldn’t overcome the Ducks 2-0 lead.

With Deslauriers knocked out of this game and Josh Manson not available, Gibson took it upon himself to defend his teammates. Gibson got on Foligno, who was chirping Drysdale. Carrick then fought Foligno soon afterward. It’s difficult to evaluate this team’s play with all the injuries and other players in COVID protocol, but one thing is certain about this team, they have heart and character. Sometimes it’s the intangibles which can make a difference between winning or losing.

Team News/Stats:

Lundestrom leads the league with third shorthanded goals(3).

Terry’s goal was his sixth game-winning goal of the season. Only Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl has more(7).

Zegras recorded his 20th assist of the season in 38 games, which is the second-fewest game played by a Ducks rookie to achieve that mark. Andy McDonald recorded 20 assists in 37 games during the 2001-02 season.

Gibson tied Jonas Hiller for third all-time in wins by an Anaheim goalie(162).
