Larsson Signs Two-Year Extension
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks signed Jacob Larsson to a two-year extension per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The contract is worth $1.1 million in 2020-21 and $1.3 million in 2021-22 per the Athletic’s Eric Stephens.
Larsson was called upon more frequently last season playing in a career-high 60 games while averaging just over 16 minutes. Offensively, he had his best production season as he finished with 11 total points(2 Goals + 9 Assists). He did struggle in other areas, however. He dropped in terms of puck possession. His Corsi For Percentage(CF%) went from 47.7% in 2018-19 to 42.7% in 2019-20 and his Fenwick For Percentage(FF%) went from 47.6% to 42.%. His on ice rating was -9 last season, which was a career-worst.
Signing Larsson does help Anaheim with the expansion requirements when Seattle officially enters the league. At least one defenseman who is exposed must be under contract in 2021-22 and have played in at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons. Larson played 60 games last season, so he would only need to play 10 in this upcoming year to meet the requirement.
The Ducks recently gave extensions to Troy Terry and Sonny Milano, who are also restricted free agents(RFAs). The team still has several RFAs to sign, which include: Alex Dostie, Chase De Leo, Kiefer Sherwood, and Deven Sideroff.
Anaheim still has three roster players to sign: Michael Del Zotto, Matt Irwin, and Ryan Miller. All three are unrestricted free agents(UFAs). Miller had contemplated retiring during the season, but when the lockdown happened it left things up in the air. He might come back and play one more time before hanging up his skates.
