NHL Network To Air Hat Trick of Duck Classic Games
By Michael Walters
On this date in 2007, the Anaheim Ducks pulled off a thrilling comeback win in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final.
The Ducks were down 1-0 very late in the game and it looked like the Detroit Red Wings were going to take a 3-2 series advantage. Anaheim, however, had other plans. Scott Niedermayer would score a power-play goal with about 47.3 seconds left in the game to tie it up at one apiece. Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom had deflected the shot, but it changed the puck’s direction causing it to go over Dominik Hasek and in the net.
When Neidermayer was asked about the goal, he said, “I just tried to get (the shot) away quick and get it on the net. Playoff hockey is tough in front of the net and you just try to get the puck to the net and that’s all I did.”
In overtime, the Ducks would complete the comeback. Andy McDonald checked Andreas Lilja in the slot, who fanned on an attempted pass in front of the Detroit net. The loose puck was picked up by Teemu Selanne, who deked Hasek, pulled the puck to his backhand as Hasek threw himself across the goal-line, and then Selanne flipped it up under the crossbar for the game-winning goal.
The Ducks would return home for Game 6 and take the series. They then went on to the Stanley Cup Final against Ottawa and you know how the story ends.
