VIDEO: Ducks Come Up Short Against The Kings

Screenshot: Fox Sports West

By Michael Walters

The Anaheim Ducks hosted the Los Angeles Kings for the second time in as many weeks. John Gibson was in net against Jonathan Quick.

In the opening period, the Ducks had a couple of good scoring chances. Derek Grant, Sam Carrick, and Rickard Rakell all had opportunities from close range, but couldn’t beat Quick. Late in the period, a point shot would get blocked by Gibson and then would sit in the crease. Matt Luff would get to the loose puck to give LA an easy tap in goal and early lead.

In the middle frame, the Ducks would get into penalty trouble and it would cost them. Derek Grant was called for tripping and Adam Henrique was called for holding about a minute later. The Kings would convert on the 5-on-3 power play as Drew Doughty would find Jeff Carter at the side of the net for the score. Later in the period Nicolas Deslauriers and Kurtis MacDermid dropped the gloves.

In the third period, the Ducks mounted a rally. Austin Wagner would get called for cross-checking and the Ducks would go on the power play. Sam Carrick would find Grant at the side of the net and he would score before Quick would recover. Anaheim continued with pressure for the rest of the game and outshot LA 17-6 in the third period, but couldn’t get the tying goal. Ducks lost 2-1.

Team News/Stats:

Brendan Guhle was reassigned to San Diego before this game started.

For the four consecutive game at least one Anaheim was involved in a fight.

Analysis

The Ducks lost by one goal but overall played a solid game. Anaheim outshot LA 37-27 and had several chances in the opening period to take the lead first. The Ducks also had multiple chances to tie up the game. One of the best chances came off Cam Fowler‘s stick as he beat Quick initially and the puck sat just outside the goal, but he couldn’t get to the puck before it was cleared away. Anaheim also scored on the power play again as the Ducks have slightly been improving with the extra man. The Anaheim Ducks Fight Club continues to roll as this was the fourth game in a row that a player was involved in a one-on-one fight.

What’s Next?

The Ducks host the New York Rangers on Saturday at high noon.
