VIDEO: Ducks Can’t Fight Their Way Past The Sharks

Screenshot: Fox Sports West

By Richard Gonzalez

The Anaheim Ducks played host to the San Jose Sharks in their final game of this home-stand. The Ducks were coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to the Detroit Redwings and the Sharks were coming off a 6-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers. This game marked the 1,000th game at home for the Ducks. John Gibson and Martin Jones were in net for their respective teams.

The Ducks would score first in the opening 69 seconds of the game when Rickard Rakell capitalized on a sharks turnover and score to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead. The Sharks came back with a conversational goal. Tomas Hertl appeared to push Gibson’s leg pad, which caused the puck to cross the line. Head Coach, Dallas Eakins decided not to challenge the play. Nicolas Deslauriers and Dalton Prout would both drop the gloves. This was Deslauriers’s second consecutive fight in as many nights.

In the second period, the tempo started off pretty slow for both teams. The Sharks would get three consecutive penalties. The Ducks failed to convert on two of the three. They would finally score on the power play when Jones coughed up a rebound and Jakob Silfverberg would score. Tomas Hertl would score his second goal of the game to even up the game later in the period.

In the third period, the Ducks and Sharks would each get a power play. The Sharks would score on their power play and also score on the Ducks’ power play to lead by two in the third. The Ducks would get some close chances but could not find a way through Jones. Max Jones would give the Ducks some hope when he scored a goal to make it 4-3. The hope quickly faded away when Logan Couture went on a breakaway and scored to seal the deal with a 5-3 win.

Analysis

The Ducks have now dropped five consecutive games. The Ducks did not play too bad in this game but ran into another unfortunate play. That play being the Sharks first goal. Nick Ritchie almost scored the game-tying goal but was denied by the post. The Ducks are having some problems finishing the plays or getting some unfortunate puck luck. The fight did seem to energize the Ducks but the Hertl goal hurt the Ducks. The Ducks will start a four-game road trip so maybe they will have better luck on the road. Hopefully, we will see the much needed Hampus Lindholm return.

What’s Next?

The Ducks will play the St. Louis Blues this Saturday (11/16).
