The Ducks started to fight back in the second period. Anaheim got a power play about seven minutes into the period, but couldn’t convert. The Ducks were creating better chances and got on the board by a point shot from Erik Gudbranson. The goal was originally credited to Sam Steel as it appeared he may have tipped the puck in front of the net. Later on, it was determined he did not touch the puck, so the goal was given to Gudbranson, his first as a Duck.
Anaheim started the third period down by one and was able to tie the game up early in the period. The teams traded penalties in the first couple minutes and then Anaheim had another power play. Steel would find NIck Ritchie sneaking in on the backside of Lehner and he would shot the puck past the diving goalie to tie the game. The Ducks had momentum outshooting the Blackhawks 13-9 in the period and were able to force overtime.
In the extra period, it took just 24 seconds for Patrick Kane to beat Miller over the shoulder to earn Chicago the win.
Team Stats/Notes:
Ryan Getzlaf played in his 1000th regular-season NHL game.
Ryan Miller suffered his first loss of the season.
Analysis
This was a trap game for Anaheim and unfortunately, they lost it. Chicago has been struggling all season and lost the night before playing Anaheim. This was a game the Ducks were probably thinking they should win before the start, but a bad opening period got them in trouble. In the first period, Anaheim took too many penalties and gave up 15 shots against. The good aspect of this game is the Ducks did play better than the Blackhawks after the first period. The Ducks were able to earn a point, but Kane ruined Getzlaf’s 1000th game with the game winner in overtime.
