VIDEO: Ducks Can’t Finish Off Red Wings

The Anaheim Ducks took on the Detroit Redwings. This is game two of the Ducks’ road trip, which saw them get their 11th loss in a row on Sunday (01/20) against the Winnipeg Jets. The Red Wings are coming off a 5-2 win on Saturday (01/12) against the Minnesota Wild. Newly acquired Ducks player, Devin Shore would make his Ducks deb tonight.

First Period:

John Gibson was tested early by making a great save on Mike Green‘s shot. Moments later we got to see Shore take the ice for his first shift alongside Carter Rowney and Daniel Sprong. Rowney would get kicked out of the face-off circle, which allowed Shore to step in and when the draw. Later in the period, Green and Jakob Silfverberg would awkwardly collide in the corner which seemed to catch Silfverberg’s leg in a weird position. Silfverberg would head to the locker room and not return for the first. Cam Fowler would go down on the next shift but would stay on the bench and in the game. The Ducks outshot (9-8) and outhit (11-4) the Wings in the first. No penalties by either team and they each end the first scoreless.

Second Period:

Shore would start the period on the top line with Ryan Getzlaf and Rickard Rakell. Still, no Silfverberg to start the second. The injury bug isn’t over yet. Ryan Kesler went to the Ducks locker room with the help from Ducks’ goalie, Chad Johnson in this period. Tyler Bertuzzi would take the game’s first penalty when he cross-checked Jake Dotchin at the 11:19 mark. The Ducks would make them pay when Nick Ritchie‘s shot goes off Rakell’s foot and in the net. The secondary assist would go to Getzlaf. Kesler returns with a little over two minutes left. He wouldn’t take a shift but did skate after the end of the second. Ducks head into the intermission up 1-0. Shots even at 16 apiece but the Ducks lead in hits, 20-6.

Third Period:

Silfverberg has a lower-body injury and was listed as questionable to return. Kesler did not return after the little skate after the second. Niklas Kronwall took the third’s first penalty when he was called for interference against Shore at the 2:40 mark. The Ducks had a good wrap around chance but did not convert. At the 5:25 mark, Anthony Mantha would beat Gibson to tie the game. The helpers came from Andreas Athanasiou and Dylan Larkin. 10 and 12 minutes later, the Wings would see Gustav Nyquist and Darren Helm each get goals to eventually extend the Ducks losing streak to 12. Silfverberg and Kesler did not return.

Analysis:

The Ducks played a great defensive game to start this off. They were winning battles and outplaying the Redwings by using their physical presence. They were moving the puck well and didn’t take any penalties in this game. They went one for two on the power play, so that was a plus too. Unfortunately, as we have seen numerous times, the Ducks didn’t play a full game and allowed three unanswered goals by the Redwings. The Ducks didn’t show up to the third period. They looked defeated after the Redwings tied the game and just went through the motions to wind down the clock.

Shore brought some energy to the Ducks. He was one of the few players that kept on playing. This was a good game for him. He played 18:48 minutes (23 shifts) recording only four hits. The Ducks will head to Minnesota to take on the Wild on Thursday (01/17).
