VIDEO: Ducks Double Up Devils

By Michael Walters

The Anaheim Ducks closed out the homestand against the New Jersey Devils. John Gibson was in net against Keith Kinkaid.

First Period

Former Duck Sami Vatanen scored just 16 seconds into the game, but the play was ruled offsides. Less than a minute later Ryan Getzlaf would score after Kinkaid left a big rebound and was out of position. After five minutes later Jakob Silfverberg deflected a Josh Manson point shot to put the Ducks up 2-0. Anaheim outshot New Jersey 17-6 and held a 2-0 advantage, but the Devils finished the period with a 5-on-3 power play.

Second Period

The Ducks killed off the 5-on-3 power play by the Devils to start the period. In the middle of the period, Corey Perry took a penalty and former Duck Kyle Palmieri scored to pull the Devils within one. The Ducks had one power play in the period, but couldn’t convert. Anaheim lead 2-1 after two periods.

Third Period

The Ducks extended their lead back to two goals when Getzlaf made a nice pass to Brandon Montour at the side of the net. Montour slammed the puck into the open part of the net for the power play score. The Devils did answer back as another former Duck Patrick Maroon tipped a pass just by Gibson. Rickard Rakell responded with a goal less than a minute later and Ducks would eventually win 4-2.

Analysis

The Ducks jumped out to an early two-goal lead and never looked back in this one. Anaheim scored on the power play and also killed off about a minute and thirty seconds worth of a 5-on-3 power play the Devils had. The Ducks dominated in the faceoff circle and doubled the Devils in shot attempts. The only downside to the game was Josh Manson suffered an upper-body injury and could not finish the game. An update should be provided later today or tomorrow.
