VIDEO: Ducks Outlast Wild In A Shootout
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks continued their road trip against the Minnesota Wild. John Gibson went in net for Anaheim and Devan Dubnyk went for the Wild. Ryan Kesler did not play as he was listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Derek Grant drew in on the second line. Kevin Bieksa returned to the lineup and Francois Beauchemin was a healthy scratch.
First Period
The Ducks got an early power play and Corey Perry took advantage sliding the puck past Dubnyk just 50 seconds into the game. Later in the period, Mikko Koivu scored to tie the game up at one apiece. Tempers did flare during this period as J.T. Brown and Nate Prosser dropped the gloves.
Second Period
In this period Jason Zucker scored to take the lead after he deflected a point shot, but the goal was waived off. The play was replayed and the officials determined it was not hit by a high stick so the goal stood. The teams exchanged a power play each in the period, but neither converted. Wild held a 2-1 lead after two periods.
Third Period
The Wild tried to hang on to the one goal lead, but Ondrej Kase had other plans. Hampus Lindholm took a point shot, which Kase corraled just in front of the Wild net. With Dubnyk down to block the shot, Kase shot the puck in the open part of the net to tie the game. The teams battled it out but ultimately had to go to overtime.
Overtime/Shootout
In the overtime, both teams had chances to win the game, but they remained tied and had to go to to a shootout. In Round 1, Ryan Getzlaf scored. In Round 3 Zach Parise scored to extend the shootout. In Round 4, Nino Niederreiter scored, but Ondrej Kase answered to continue the shootout. It went 11 Rounds with Nick Ritchie beating Dubnyk to finally end the game and give Anaheim two much needed points.
